To be fair - if the USN actually makes a bulk buy of Mogamis - Henderson suddenly becomes part of a much bigger supply chain ecosystem, and if done properly the unit cost of a Mogami should plummet.

No doubt we would still find some way to mess it up.

What we need to avoid doing is moving stuff off overseas just as our new infrastucture and workforce comes on line.

Osborne was hitting its stride when it was hit with a blackhole that caused many of the workforce issues with Hunter, we will have the same issues in the west.

Pollies and journos are looking backwards, not forwards. We need to make decisiins based on the future not the past as every change in direction, every backtrack, every time we percist with already failed concepts, we increade cost and blow the schedule.

To be fair for this Navy thread they are implementing a new class of ships in the Mogami plus pursing the original SSN script.
( The later I have reservations, but that’s my personal opinion)
Hobart upgrades and new missiles for the RAN
So yes some positive movement.
I do have reservations that survey and MCM ships are not being replaced
The unmanned stuff will need a manned mother ship and clever technology always has to go on a manned something.
Preferably a dedicated ship.

Navy will still need large ships ;so it concerns me HMAS Choules will not be replaced and that Navy for there intended bigger fleet will have just two supply ships.
Army’s intended LCM and LCH should be a complement not a replacement for big ships.

The intended multipurpose vessel had merit but my preference was an extra LHD and Supply Class
Really not big dollars but a great return for capital spent
Rule of three
LHDs will in part morph into drone carriers and we should capitalise on that space
Fortuitously, we already have two excellent ships in the Canberra class.
As for the patrol boat fleet, they really need a bit more clout than what they currently possess?

Add to the list some light weight add ons in the form of small UAV s , attack drones , SHORAD , plus ensure all the major ships have SEARAM.
Greatest threat in our time and all!!!!

So some good stuff but also a lot of gaps that need filling for a balanced fleet both now and as it grows.

I didn't vote for them but concede some good decisions have been made and there are gaps. As long as outside interference from a Victorian advising the PM doesn't screw it up.

Had an old friend who did drafting for the ANZACs first many years.
Met one of his colleagues a couple of months ago and had a chat about the yard.

All history now , but many a Williamstown ship are still sailing today.
Chapters in time.

Royal Australian Navy trials remotely piloted aircraft systems from offshore patrol vessels in Western Australia

looks like HMAS Arafura is being put to use trialling aerial drones. Small stuff, but these drones can spend upwards of 2 hours in the air with optical/IR payloads, or carry upwards of 25kg.

I think it is good that drones are being tested, and that the Arafuras are integrating with this technology. They seem an ideal platform for drones, inparticular aerial types. Interestingly, part of the testing assessed their resilience to EM interference.

These are only short range drones, but one assumes that different drones serve different purposes.
