You have to understand the resistance of both the RAAF and parts of the bureaucracy to any suggestion that Navy should ever reacquire the ability to operate fixed wing at sea. It’s anathema to them at a very fundamental level. It breaches a central part of their beliefs (sorry South) to admit that anybody but a person in light blue has the intellectual, or other, capacity to conduct aerial warfare - or should get any budget to do so. And yes, I am biased and a little bitter. But I’ve also been involved in, and effected by, discussions where that position was put, and not too subtlety.

Clearly the solution is sea planes.

Politics in the military, who would have thunk it?
But that HAS to go out the window. The world has changed and we are facing a very real threat of war in our region. And it may not come from an obvious source.
The world is run by autocratic tyrants and anything can happen.

Agree the world is in an unpredictable era.
Alliances have a place, but in the end a nation needs its own military options to make sovereign choices.
We need more focus on short term enhancement while recognising and continuing with long term projects.

I acknowledge the challenges of money and training etc but it’s always interesting when a nation actually goes to war, when significant money and commitment is needed and given stuff actually does happen very quickly.
It appears political words don’t appear to mirror desired output and need.

You have three seats, so you can put an air force aviator, a sailor and an soldier in them.. manned by all three, paid by all three.

Navy doesn't seem to mind army operating watercraft. Navy and fixed wing seems to unfurl deep seated paranoia in air forces...
