Apparently there is a good chance that they will operate some STOVL F-35B's, however it isn't official or anything, and i think they would be RAAF rather than RAN as the ADF probably don't want to project power like that

Images of the LHD models on ADI’s Land Warfare Conference exhibition stand are available from the Image Library section of the ADI website.

Note images 32 and 33 - the Harriers are plainly visible. So it would seem that the ships could very well have a STOVL capability (depending on which type is chosen of course).

Cheers for the link, im hoping for the STOVL capability :D

Also, the model of the mistral actually looks good there, even though it is only the front of it lol, still, i'd like to see the navantia design get chosen ;)

Fire on HMAS Waller

I was wondering today about the next RAN sub, I hadn't read anything about a replacement or supplement for the Collins class, and thought that I'd ask if there was much of a idea as to the time frame and kind of capabilities the RAN was looking at.
From "Pacific Sentinel" 28 Feb 2014

"This afternoon HMAS Waller, one of the Royal Australian Navy’s submarines, experienced a fire while on the surface off the West Australian coast. Emergency response actions were taken to extinguish the fire.

There were no casualities. As a precaution, four members of the ship’s crew who were involved in the response to the fire have been landed for observation.

HMAS Waller had recently completed a scheduled maintenance period and was at sea as part of her return to operations.

A full investigation into the incident will be held.

At this stage no further details are available.

AUS DoD"
