Bit embarrasing, as Phillipines Navy wants to conduct their first SINKEX for long time.
Not long time. Their last SINKEX was last year, exactly the same Balikatan exercise.

Ex BRP Caliraya was the target. She actually broke free and beached before they towed her back out.

I put the Reuters version that derive from Yomiuri reports that @koxinga put in General News thread. The Abukuma is basically Destroyer Escort (DE) similar term that USN use up to 50's before change it to Frigates. By present standard it is can be categorize as Light Frigates or Large Corvette.

In that sense it still fit with Philippines latest procurement of Large Corvette/OPV/Light Frigates from South Korea. I suspect this is also part of Japan try to regain initiative to Philippines defense market after ROK seems swept away the latest procurement.

Problem with Japan naval defense products is they don't have anything at this moment that meet classification range of Large Corvette or Light Frigate. Mogami is just bigger then what Philippines procured at this moment. Giving and perhaps modified Abukuma can be the way to open the market. Just like they've done before with Philippines Coast Guard.

It is interesting if Japan later on provide modified and modernized Light Frigate design base on Abukuma for ASEAN market. Not all ASEAN market can afford Mogami based Frigates.

The Abukuma purchase is still being looked at after Philippine officials inspected the ships still in service with the MSDF. A decision is likely to be made in "the coming months", so possibly before the end of the year.

One small question that has not been discussed is their integration into PN service. Unlike new built Mogami's for RAN, these are direct from Japan.

Meaning their systems should be all Japanese including whatever maintenance and operations manuals, training materials etc. Gonna take hell of a time to get them translated. Manuals might be fine, the systems though...

Not a total surprise but the news it has broke.

@Ananda

Maybe too many overhaul and construction programs to handle?

Hopefully PAL will not rush and cut corners to save time, but finish the vessels properly and deliver two reliable vessels of good quality to keep the Philippine Navy as a satisfied customer.

The current CEO has too many project, and it is in my opinion has already reach capacity limit. PAL CEO wants grand project, but he should supposedly work with other shipyard in order PAL focus on new project and design. However seems he still want to take all.

FMP is new project and design, and the most complex design that PAL has done so far. So does UAE LPD as it is not just enlarging current Makasar Class design, but also have more complex and automated system.

Makasar class design should be handed over to other Shipyard and PAL should only supervise. The delay with FMP due design changes already predict to have effect on other project. Thus what happen with Philipines LPD is not surprising. PAL simply has limited dock capacities to do final assembly.
