OTOH it must be pretty galling that a nation is getting stiffed with a $850B annual trade deficit and paying for most of the Defence heavy lifting within the Western Alliance of liberal democracies. I would say that is pretty alienating.
If Trump really wanted to reduce national debt, why add 1.5 Trillion dollars to it with his insane tax cuts, most of which benefits corporations already propped up by govt bailouts ? but i digress, this is off topic.Trump himself has raised tensions with North Korea with his 'twitter war' with Kim Jong Un, unprofessional ,dangerous, and sheer luck that Kim had come to the table, and not retaliated against his neighbours and Us forces there.

Can we please not descend into the depths of US politics please. There are 'things' which lurk there which ought never to be seen.

That's been their choice, the US could have changed policy after the cold war ended but decided to keep on spending like it never ended. Also most of the conflicts the US have been involved in it's easily argued that they started them or set up the conditions that resulted in a conflict which they later entered.

The not so much for Afghanistan is not by a large margin. Mind you their cricket team has made very good progress.
You naughty boy. Don't you know that a lot of the Aussie posters will be suffering anxiety and depression today after the poms thrashed their cricket team, so don't mention cricket :p:p:p:p:D:D:D;););)

This post has been edited to reflect that I have now read the documents.

The NZ 2018 Strategic Defence Policy Statement is out.

This document goes further than the previous DWPs have and it names countries; China and Russia. Beijing will probably spit the dummy over this and retaliate, similar to what they have recently done to Australia. Beijing has a thinner skin than the current POTUS. It clearly states what the current govt see as threats to NZ's security and well being. I think that the current govt are moving away from the fixation of trade at all costs. It remains to be seen whether or not they understand that defence and trade are closely interlinked.

The document clearly states that the strategic situation has deteriorated markedly in recent years and that the future will not be smooth sailing. It discusses the Pacific reset and has raised the defence priority for Defence's ability to operate in the South Pacific, Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. This level of priority is to be the same as Defence's ability to operate domestically. It also discusses climate change, the impacts that this will have and Defence's response to it. It notes the US inward focus, it's withdrawal from both the TTP and the Paris Climate Change Accord, and the uncertainty that now surrounds US policy. It also clearly states that the Asia Pacific area and South East Asia are highly important to NZ.

To me the proof of the pudding will be if the MOD / NZDF budgets are significantly increased both for CAPEX and OPEX. Personally I would like to see the the Defence Funding Vote back to 2% GDP and the secret squirrel budgets removed from the umbrella of defence.

The Review of Defence Procurement Policies and Practices for Major Capability Projects has been released. Overall it gives a good report of the procurement system and states that the Defence procurement system is now an exemplar for the rest of the public service. It explains what the changes have been, doesn't find anything that is poor practice and offers suggestions on how the system can be improved. This is really good because Treasury are the ones who said that the Defence procurement system is an exemplar for the rest of the public service. There is close liaison between Defence and Treasury.

Just went through some of the Stuff comments. My head hurts and I need a lie down and maybe some whisky.

The level of ignorance and rhetoric on display is breathtaking.
Definitely double shot time and you have have two double shots because a bird can't fly on one wing.

The commenters on these sorts of sites to stories like this are generally those that want to 'gripe' about the subject so I wouldn't for a moment assume the percentage of mindless droll reflects the wider population. You've done a brave & loyal service Ngati by daring to attempt to inject some reason & rational thinking into the debate... someone has too! I see 'JefRef' has once again stated the P8 is crap, need to P1... although he might be pro-defence all he's done is devalue your reasoned answer...sigh! The comments board resembles an asylum more than an Oxford Union debate!

Thanks. Whilst I fervently support people's right to free expression, some people would whinge if their arse was on fire and would whinge when you peed on the fire to put it out.

Well done Ngati for having a go there.

Probably wasting your words but true words are always valuable.

I have just joined up as 'Ueda Station" and put in a couple of reply comments on to the Stuff newspaper comments site. Posts are now in moderation - no abuse just corrections of mis-information with facts and knowledge and to be fair I think I know a wee bit about the topic. :D

The NZ search and rescue region graphic in the report clearly shows the magnitude of NZ's responsibility in this area. The positioning of this graphic over Europe and Northern Africa gives us "northern hemisphere" posters a clear idea of the immense area involved.
