A very interesting article pointing out the "jump" that will be required to effectively use the technology that the F-22 and soon the F-35 will be bringing to the battlefield. It will be interesting to see what effect the beyond BVR sims will have on optimizing situational awareness for an extremely broad expanse of terrain. Having the capability and utilizing it to full advantage will tax the fifth generation fighter pilot, but as Lt. Gen. Hawk Carlisle states "thats really the only way to realistically provide training for the challenging environment that BVR combat will be." I am paraphrasing here just to give credit where its do. Thanks for posting that Colay, I can't begin to imagine the complexity of that kind of threat environment, a lot will depend on operating an LO platform, hoping that you see the bad guys, before they see you.

Well that is the point of an LO platform, but as always, it's not the poor guy in the F-22 or F-35 hoping his platform's shaping and materials alone can defeat the vast arsenal in possession of the enemy.
It's that poor guy and his own vast arsenal operating simultaneously with him that's intended to defeat the enemy.
I've yet to hear of the VHF radar that can operate in the face of HARM or ALARM missiles raining down upon it for example...

Sorry ADM, I thought we were talking about the F-35, I'm missing your point. Colays post was about the training to excercise that aircraft to its potential, I'm certainly not trying to minimize any one else's sacrifice or perspective, one son in law has served two tours in Iraq, the other a tour in Iraq and a tour in Afghanistan with the US Army. I sent one with my personal Benchmade combat folder and several new hi-cap mags, as did many parents when such things were in short supply.

Well, this would solve the problem of getting legacy jet pilots to mix It up with the Raptors.. it isn't fun for pilots' egos getting clobbered repeatedly. LOL. It will provide for more realistic training scenarios. Having a virtual Red Force to play with will save a lot of money as well.
they've had red teams with real life enemy jets for 50+ years - they've had virtual red teams (emulators and red flagged blue jets for 50+ years
they've had red teams in a virtual sim'd cycle for 10+ years
Yes, not questionning that.. but this technology would seem to hold promise for more varied and intensive training scenarios which would otherwise be constrained by limited available assets, finite budgets,etc.
the reason why no dual seat trainers within type are made anymore is because we sim train - and sim training has changed in leaps and bounds over the last 4 years
ie the tech sets have been in place for over a decade. public comprehension hasn't kept up

I love how they continually reference the "Probably not" quote. Unfortunately for Mike Price, it seems he has an issue with basic reading comprehension.
The "probably not" comment is clearly relating to the limited F-35 capabilities available in software Blocks I and 2 and is referenced by the acknowledgement of the delays in the software build for the intended INITIAL operating capability...

Jack I read your post, and now its gone, someone hack your post? I'm thinkin maybe we should send someone by with a couple of aspirin, but I thought you were agreeing with old man Sweetman. Anyway, things seem to be going well at the school house and out east they flew a formation with a couple of Cs, there are some great pix up of that. The video you posted was great though, do you have it on the J-20 thread now? I didn't see it over there. They are also doing some night refueling at Edwards, with some good pix up on AFMs daily report the last several weeks. Also in AFMs daily report 5/14/2012 Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz has assigned Maj. Gen. Christopher Bogdan to be Deputy Director of the F-35 Strike Fighter Program Office in Arlington, Va. Cheers Brat

Well I'm glad I got to see it, and your post did make my day, I'm glad I'm not the only one, it does seem like things are moving along with our little bird. I enjoy all of your comments, I just sincerely think that canceling our Raptor was a big mistake for the US, and quite obviously Gen Hostage thinks so as well. I am truly sorry if I came off as a bloviator, I have actually always been a fan of the JSF, and I am a big fan of the A-10. My Dad always loved his Aussie students in the C-130, and I think those guys were probably his favorites in Vietnam, kept him entertained and he admired their pluck. When do you guys get your school house birds?
