Georgian medians reports russians bomb more infrastructure, including sea port in Poti. This is either Georgian hysteria, or, as i predicted, russians try to punish Georgians as much as possible before tomorrow cease fire.

Perhaps russia is trying to destroy every port, airfield that gerogia can receive help in the form of arms from US/NATO and effectively isolating georgia, and pound it 24/7

I'm back. No I didin't go to sleep. I'm on lunch and at work right now. I'll try to post some updates.

Ok so according to lenta.ru Russia has air striked the Naval base at Poti as well as airfields in Marniuli and Bornisi. Lenta.ru also reports one Georgian Su-25 shot down. Georgia is shutting down Russian news channels.

Newsru.com reports 12 russians dead 150 wounded in the resumend fighting around Ts'hinvali. Georgia is reporting 30 dead, most soldiers.

18:00 (where I left off last) Russian operational HQ in Vladikavkaz was tken command of by Vladimir Bolduirev, command of Russian land forces.

18:22 Kokoytui reports that the casualties are in the hundreds (rather then thousands) and that 4 Georgian tanks are destroyed. Looks like the 4 tanks are a total figure rather then a single incident.

18:58 Georgia is pulling troops out of Iraq in response to the Russian invasion. Looks lie they're trying hard to push international political buttons.

19:07 Georgian news report 3 dead and 5 wounded during Russian bombing of airport and Marneuli.

19:23 Starting on midnight august 9th Russia will stop air-communication with Georgia (civilian flight of course).

19:27 State Department of the USA is sending a mediator to Tbilisi.

19:32 As a result of the Russian air raid on Marneuli several Georgian planes are destroyed or damaged.

19:37 Georgian firing positions that were shelling Russian forces in Ts'hivali are suppressed.

21:03 Casuaties of the battle for Ts'hinvali are around 1400 says Eduard Kokoytui.

This is from lenta.ru which also reports a column of about 20 trucks with soldiers heading from Batumi to S. Ossetia.

22:45 Moscow Time most of S. Ossetia is in Georgian hands, but Ts'hinvali is apparently under the control of S. Ossetia and Russian forces with sproadic fighting still ongoing in southern part of the city.

Also CNN reported that there were "reports" of bombings in Georgia's capital Tbilisi although another reporter on spot in the Georgian capital denied there was anything of that sort happening.

I'm watching CNN and they are saying that Georgia wants the US to airlift the 2000 Georgian troops in Iraq back home to help fight the Russians.

Lomaia , chief of NSC of georgia is talking live in CNN saying that,

- Georgia has detected Russian planes headed towards tbilisi.
- Georgia has evacuated gov buildings in Tbilisi.
- They are preparing for WAR with Russia.
-State of emergency is going to be announced in a few hours.

Looks like its gonna become an all out war.

Actually, how is 2000 troops from Iraq gonna do a work that the whole of Georgian's troops and military from georgian soil cant do? This is just a publicity stunt to force US to intervene and save the geroian's presidents a**.

Seems rather like usual panic due to unexpected russian response.

Btw, seems russians bombing Poti port confirmed. From unconfirmed sources Tu-22M3 regiment was relocated to Caucasus and now bombing Georgian Kutaisi military base, among other targets.

Reportedly, 3 PGM bombs were dropped on Poti port - 1 for each ship terminal, administrative buildings, and Poti military base.

First off, I just want to say that Georgian decision to remove 1,000 troops from Iraq to join the fighting is chiefly a political move with zero military significance.

How do they plan on getting into airspace prowled by Russian air force jets and with no civilian aircraft (which probably means ROE will be greatly relaxed) without at the very least being intercepted and being forced to land. And if after they manage to get in, how are they going to land on destroyed airstrips and runways? This isn't even counting the very significant problems they will face trying to organize this +1,000 man force and push them into battle.

This purely a diplomatic move to show the US that Georgia is in a very desperate and that the US' relations with Georgia are going to be harmed greatly if the Americans don't help.

In an update, the Georgians say they lost control of parts of the S.Ossetia capital after heavy Russian bombardment.

Georgia is playing with fire here. Russia is a far stronger opponent and there is no way that America will risk a direct intervention, for a start they won't have the troops for it, they're still heavily committed in Iraq and Afghanistan. They have significant air power based at Incirlik in Turkey which could be used in support of Georgian forces but that would pave the way for World War 3. The Russians feel they have suffered nothing but humiliation since 1991 as American and NATO troops have ended up stationed almost on their borders. Places like South Ossetia are issues of huge emotional significance for them, they are not going to let South Ossetia turn into another Kosovo. They feel they've been pushed into a corner and can't go back any further. If this turns into a full scale war then I can only see one winner.

Meh...at least it's Georgian. :D

The 1991 Gulf War was pretty much the nail in the coffin for T-72 exports to any customers of importance, anyway.
Have you noticed that all of the destroyed tank photos being shown in this little skirmish seem to have their turrets uprooted.

Well, those troops could be airlifted to Turkey first and then helicoptered to Georgia's rear areas (those that Russians hadn't bombed yet); perhaps the
V-22s now in Iraq could also be utilized in this- to prove their real worth!

The U.S is not going to risk bringing in aircraft over hostile territory, if they do it will be to pick up the U.S advisors and that will be coordinated with Russia and Georgia.

If US did help, it would be interpretated by Russia as aggression by US. They will rightly claim US has choosen to side military with Georgia by providing militairy planes to transport US trained Georgia troops to the battlefield.

According to media report I read today (there been many) there were a 1000 advisors and other staff there now there around 300. It suggests US had advanced warning of possible attack because reduction of advisors suggest their mission to train had ended. US should have relised this.

I would not know if they had advanced warning or not, this will most likely be debated here in the U.S after the smoke settles.

I used your comment as reference to the hundreds of advisors in Georgia. I just thought it was suspicous. Like you correctly stated after the "smoke settles" stuff will leak out about US involvement or lack off it.
