Brazil and Su-35

Fighter choices

Those F-15s like our F-16s have a lot of hours on the frames so buying second hand Eagles & Vipers from the US wouldn't be a good route unless complete overhauls were involved. Adding on new orders to the back of South Korea's mighty Eagles would be a better route. The later Eagles produced have a little air to ground capabilities as well too, not on the level of E models. Brazil I think is one step closer going with the Rafale's with a slim, slim shot for LM Vipers. For some reason I feel the Americans are out of this bid and the French are going to win by default. Now it comes down to hammering a contract and by now the French have new sales personnel "right" (wink) so things may begin to move forward. Brazil sign on for the sub from France but not the Rafale's so nothing is in stone. Buying the sub and building a nuclear boat down the road seem important to Brazil there navy must have a lot of pull in there government more then the air force it seems. I might be wrong but I don't see a lot of blue water threats for Brazil's navy to deal with. Subs can be nasty little coastal defenders too and not purely for blue water. Is this something to do with the new off shore oil deposits?

The latest on the Brazilian FX-2 program is that there are (4) contenders: the Rafale, Su-35, Gripen, and Eurofighter. Seems like the F-16 has dropped out.

Word has it the Rafale has the best chance since the French president pledged ToT to Brazil. The Su-35 is also a hot contender as it's price is the most attractive. The Eurofighter is too expensive and the Gripen's legs are too short.

The program is worth about US$ 1.3 billion and is for 26 aircraft. No dates or timeline have been set.

It makes perfect sense to me if Brazil buys Russian tech instead of Euorpean ones or American ones those are just so expensive, and 24 planes maybe for a small amount like that they should spend some good money.

Brazil Plans to Invest in Latest Military Technology

By Heloiza Canassa and Andre Soliani

April 9 (Bloomberg) -- Brazil will boost investments in the latest military technology to strengthen its armed forces, said Strategic Matters Minister Mangabeira Unger.

Latin America's biggest economy will buy the newest generation of jet fighters for the Air Force and build a nuclear submarine for the Navy, Unger told reporters today in Brasilia at a joint news conference with Defense Minister Nelson Jobim.

Brazil's defense buildup comes amid a military spending spree in South America. Colombia is buying 24 Israeli Kfir fighter jets. Ecuador will boost military spending 19 percent this year. Venezuela has signed deals for $4.4 billion in arms purchases including 24 Russian-built Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets and 38 combat and transport helicopters.

``Brazil doesn't face threats from any country, but we need to be prepared,'' Jobim told reporters.

Unger said Brazil's main military concern is the Amazon, where the country borders Venezuela, Colombia and Peru.

The region's importance for Brazil was heightened by recent disclosures that guerrillas from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia are operating across the border in Venezuela and Ecuador, said Peter Hakim, president of the Inter-American Dialogue, a policy research group in Washington. A Colombian attack on a FARC base in Ecuador in March sent tensions soaring between the two countries and Venezuela, Ecuador's ally.

`Flare Up'

``The flare up in the Andes helped Brazil recognize that they aren't as well-positioned in the Amazon as they probably want to be,'' Hakim said by phone.

Jobim said the Defense Ministry is considering the purchase of jet fighters such as the French-made Rafale or U.S- made Lockheed Martin Corp.'s F35.

The country is also seeking an international partnership to help build a nuclear submarine. Brazil has started negotiations with the U.S., France, India, Russia and the U.K.

Brazil also will seek support from its neighbors to create a South American Defense Council to help coordinate the countries' military strategies, Jobim said.

He will visit Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez next week to discuss setting up the council, then travel to Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.

The Brazilian initiative follows Venezuela and Ecuador's dispatch of troops to the Colombian border after the cross- border raid killed 26 people.

The FARC would be met ``with bullets'' should they cross into Brazilian territory, Jobim said.

Why not? They been buying French weapons for a long time, and could get, IMO, a very good terms as 1st export Rafale customer! Those fighters come in AF and navalized versions, while naval F-35 is still in development stage.

If a Rafale bid where to be linked with Embraer getting a significant workshare on the order, I would agree with you that it has a very good chance of securing a Brazilian order. As said earlier, Rafale is natural progression from the Mirage 2000C.

Dassault Aviation had bought a 15% stake in Embraer during the previous F-X program bid. Dassault's candidate was the Mirage 2000BR which was to be co-manufactured with Embraer in Brazil.

The F-X program was cancelled in Feb 2005 and shortly afterwards Dassault sold their shares in Embraer.

When you say Su-35, do you mean the current Su-35 or the Su-35M currently being tested?

Russia to Make G5 Fighter in Tandem with Brazil

Sorry for the basic question but what is a G5 and does the below article mean Brazil's signing on with Russia and not France?
Thanks

Russia to Make G5 Fighter in Tandem with Brazil
Russia and Brazil have inked an agreement to jointly develop G5 fighter jets and boosters that will place into orbit different types of satellites.
Russia and Brazil intend to develop the G5 fighter jet, AP reported with reference to Brazil’s Minister for Strategic Affairs Roberto Mangabeira Unger. The agreement also spells out joint production of boosters capable of placing into orbit various types of satellites.

Of interest is that Russia and India concluded a similar agreement for G5 fighters past fall.

The G5 fighter will be created by 2009, Russia’s First Vice Premier Sergei Ivanov pledged earlier. Member of Sukhoi Aviation Holding, Chkalov Novosibirsk Aviation Production Association will manufacture the front section and auxiliaries for making the parts from glass and carbon composite. Other enterprises of Sukhoi will focus on remaining components.

5g

Thanks I thought they were talking about some new fighter called or named 5G, I never saw 5th generation written as just 5G before. The article didn't give a lot information I wonder if Russia still has a shot for selling some high end Flankers?

Why shouldn't they? Before any exportable variant of the PAK FA will be available it will be 2020+. Enough time to sell additional Flankers if you ask me. I also doubt they will offer the PAK FA to any one.

Hopefully this deal gets through? And it also gives credibility to the report that Russia has cancelled the PAK FA as an untrue rumour.

Wrightings about cancelled PAK-FA are just funny stuff of Russian delayed 1.April or something ..have nothing to do with reallity

Russia will eventually produce two 5th generation fighters (heavy (PAK-FA) and light weight(Mig.corp)

Flankers

Sounds like Russia needs funding and are trying to cut the French out the aircraft sales, the aircraft industry is a cutthroat business. I'm not trying to make anybody mad but is the PAK FA project even real? Also the link I attached is from a Russian sources is there anything from Brazil's side released on this?
If Brazil doesn't buy Russia Flankers now what chance is there if buying or investing in some unknown PAK FA project. I would be interested in reading the Brazilian side of this.

If true or in part I think the boosters part of this article has more of a chance of happening.

Below is a link to a simple Google search for PAK-FA

Well belive what you want but do you belive India or Brasil would side with Russia if PAK-FA project does not exist!!!!

Most of the tehnologies for the PAK-FA have already being developt from earlier tehnology demonstrator and some of them are now tested within new Su-35-1 and Mig-35 ...

Basicly you are worried because you have no info about it ... well Russia has become secrative like in good old Soviet times... Their new tank T-95 will be showed in 2 months from now and still no one has seen a pic of it ... a bit frustrating ...

Not really

One has to be a little secretive about certain projects in the aircraft industry I'll go along with that. Being worried or being frustrated over it I don't think so, hope things work out.
