The USS Harry S. Truman has lost an F-18 in the Red Sea on Monday. Both the tow-vehicle as the towed F-18 went suddenly overboard. Everybody survived, but the damage has to be around $60-70 million.

So a discussion is underway about replacing the Constellation class with USV and/or NOMARS. Talk about enhancing an already existing C-F, FFS, why not just build non modified FREMMs?

Because the USN isn’t the French or Italian navy.
They couldn’t. It’s that simple. They were forced to buy an off the shelf hull but the ship they need is completely different in mission role and doctrine that the FREMM. Same for any other hull type. They needed a clean sheet but felt they didn’t have the time for that so they rushed to build off a derivative of an Existing frigate hull.
The French Italian combat control system
Doesn’t meet US requirements or standards, the missile systems are completely different. FREMM has ASW sensors and systems that the U.S. wasn’t interested in.
So the Navy bought the wrong ship to they have to turn it into the right one.
Add on that the industrial and mission equipment are by necessity completely different FREMM weather Italian or French variants is not an option.

Delays with Ford class, Virginia class, and Columbia class but now the America class seems to confirm big time the crisis with naval ship building. Yes, COVID along with a skills shortage and idiot pollies are partly responsible. However, LCS, Zumwalt, and the Constellation class illustrate the biggest issue, senior naval officer failure (with some contractor assistance). The USN needs a kick-ass leader like Adm Rickover.

USN will begin conversion on Zumwalt Destroyers to Hypersonic Strike vessels. The conversion focus on replace their 155mm AGS with LMVLS that are larger then standard MK41 VLS. This will enable Hypersonic missile instalation.
I do love how old news is recycled.
Article from January where it was announced that USS Zumwalt had already had her main guns removed and "all-up round canisters" hypersonic missile tubes installed.

They’re not making way - they are rafted; there’s a pontoon between them. Not sure the verb “sail”, which does imply making way, is appropriate. Nevertheless, good to see even it could only be done in an anchorage, or when stopped and drifting in calm seas.

Scary just how bad of a state of American shipbuilding is in. Meanwhile China has a massive shipbuilding industry, biggest in the world in fact. We aren’t just talking a little bit bigger either. It could have 200 times the capacity of the US.

The Chinese navy is already numerically larger than the US and is growing at a faster rate. The qualitative gap is also shrinking.

Really America is going to have to rely heavily on smaller Autonomous vessels.

Probably needs to start thinking about utilising the spare ship building capacity of allies such as Japan and Korea as well.

Absolutely Japan and SKorea could help out and perhaps even some European yards but US pollies would torpedo this solution. The Jones act restricts foreign commercial shipyards as foreign vessels can't travel between two US ports. USN ships by law must be built in the US (as does most military kit).

The catch of course being that China can build smaller autonomous vessels as well!

And China is likely to be fighting closer to home, possibly under friendly air cover.
