New large corvette from Italy + video on FREMM

To anybody who's interested, Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (joint venture of Fincantieri shipyards and Finmeccanica) proposes a new large corvette on its site, and a very interesting virtual reality video on FREMM (Italian ASW and GP versions).

Regarding the large corvette design, it is probably intended as a replacement of our Artigliere (the Lupos built for Iraq) and Minerva corvettes, but could be a good proposal for export.

It's in English by the way ;)

Seems like a further development of NUPA and NUMC, bot h of which are incidentally offered in beefed up versions.

Yes indeed they are. Provided funds are available these beefed up NUMC should replace the Minerva corvettes which are still recent (end of the '80s) but lack helo facilities.

If you take the position that a corvetee can't be all things in all role, the Minerva's are still very good all round ships. May be worthwhile to trade Aspide SAM for helideck and hangar though. But still, a solid design.

IIRC our Navy did run a study to convert the Minervas to OPVH by taking out Aspide, its illuminator, and adding a platform with a foldable hangar. Apparently the hull is not large enough to ensure optimal helo operations when sea conditions are rough. Since we already have 10 quite big OPVH (4 Cassiopea, 4 Comandanti NUMC, 2 Evolved Comandanti or NUPA) I doubt we'll see a modification of the ships.
