Ship names of the RAN

Seriously what is the current organisation of the USN in the South Pacific ? Since the closure of the Philippino bases I've read of a base in Singapore and of training (but nothing more) in Australia.
Hawaii, Guam and Okinawa being a bit too far north, I guess the USN does need a base in the South Pacific for operations in the eastern part of the Indian Ocean and up to the South China Sea...

cheers

I know they are surging SSNs forward to Guam. Talks have stationing a carrier in Singapore or dredging Guam to handle one. I think at the end you will just see a HUGE base in Guam.

Makes sense vs potential issues with China... but with nothing between Diego Garcia in the western bit of the Indian Ocean and Guam, that would leave a big hole. May be the increasing friendship with India could allow for some logistical help ? That could be a backup if the deal with Singapore doesn't materialize.

cheers

I really think we should leave the Indian Ocean to the Indians. If they ever get their 3 carriers that could really relieve alot of pressure for the USN. If they can control the Straights of Malacca we can focus on Taiwan. With dwindling carrier numbers we are going to need their assistance.

Sounds reasonable. Though I doubt they'll have anything more than 2 carriers. The Gorshkov modication is late, and the IAC won't be ready until ... 2012 earliest ? By then the former Hermes will be retired. A 3rd could be built for... 2020 ?
Anyway if relations are "normalized" with Pakistan, a lot of IN resources will be available to help out in policing of international waters.

cheers

You would probably be the new home of PACFLT... if you want it. ;)
Gee....aren't you going to miss all those ships...if you give them to us!

You don't mind if we modify a few of the ships...give them a bit of an Australian feel...some BBQs and some eskies!

So what will you do with all of those unemployed sailors...I guess you could beef up the USMC.

One huge nuclear target. :(
Well that's what San Diego and Norfolk are now... it's alot cheaper than maintaining a dozen different facilities for all kinds of vessles. Any place that has the ABM AEGIS converts are already the safest ports on earth.

In Fort Worth they are not under any illusions they aren't a target, with the big Lockheed plant which is building F-16s and F-35s. At least Norfolk and San Diego have a better missile defence.

Damn telstra and its failure to get ADSL nation wide, missing all the fun, anyway

The US is already getting a Training station here, and its causing enough Hoo Haa to last the next 20 years, good luck with a Nuclear Carrier and Sub in a port, kinda hard with the Nuke free zones(damn greens)

You want USS... that can be arranged. We will gladly accept your petition for statehood
Oddly enough, some Proffesor of some US University put it to NSW Uni group about Aus becoming a state of the US, he may have gotten into a Uni party and had a little help getting that put across the room.

. The loss of a ship with a royal name might be construed as an added insult to injury. The Falklands campaing refrained from using the Queen Elisabeth 2 - alledgedly for this (a somewhat facile explaniation - but..), instead they used the Canberra - which is a rather rude hint to Australia.
Yeah that would be right, sacrafice Canberra for the queen, hell if the ship is like the city, go for it!
If the US Names a ship Canberra more then happy to name a ship the Chicago, non-history reading "know alls" would spit chips, but in terms of ANZUS and History, would be fantastic to see, especially to the USN/RAN links

I believe that these names still have a place today. It is not about what language they may orginate from. On another the topic, the guys on Nuship Bundberg are already trying to get the Bundy Bear to appear at their commisioning
Cheers
Wow, i feel a little surprised, i can imagine the Coat of Arms having a Drop Bear thrown in it somewhere, more then likely the Sailors just want a couple of bottles of free Bundy, bastards, i gotta get posted there.

Ok so an AWD is not a capital ship, however the RAN are never likely to have one so something has to be used as the Flagship so why not one of a the LPH's or one of the AWD's and bang on the countries name.
The only thing that would not go down well would be using PM's name's!
HMAS Bob Hawke or HMAS John Howard...that would really making them into big floating targets...I shudder at the thought!
The Sirius has been built to house a command Console with Crew, perhaps best for such situations, refuel and re-order all in one. The LPH will have requirments for command and Control, that way it can be designated for Flagship roles. I take it modern Flagships are Carriers for most countries anyway, ie USN and UK Ark Royal
And the HMAS Little Johhny, i Love it! If we told him only carriers can get PMs names, much like USN, then maybe...

Yes, the Canberra liner of 30,000 tons was risked while the QE2 wasn't, but I think it had more to do with economics than name. If the worst happened, the Canberra would have cost the treasury less than $30 million whereas the QE2 would have cost the treasury more than $100 million. If the names were reversed, I would suspect the QE2 would have been risked.

Thank You Sea Toby for bringing me up to speed on that question.
I've always considered the explanaiton i brought forward to the firing squad more than a little fastidious.

Yes, would like to see a HMAS Boags. Don't know if you would waste naming any ships after other brands. ;)
HMAS COOPERS would have to be the flagship.

Imagine though, the consternation on the enemy's face when they try and pronounce HMAS XXXX's name!

For the AWD's I reckon we should bring back the "V" class of names. Voyger, Vendetta and Vampire.

I think it would be a appropriate way to honour the men who died durning the Vampire/ Melbourne collision. Plus they sound COOL:nutkick . Myself I would to serve on the HMAS Vendetta:rolleyes:

I have a far better suggestion...let's call one HMAS America, and the other HMAS Hollywood ;)

That should get us in the good books with our allies :D

Do we really need to get any further into their good books? Afterall, we have already have committed troops to every major war they've had since WWII - and usually been the first Ally to do so, as well. Do we really need to sacrifice our own interests even further?
