Active laser self-defence weapon

I just learned about china's new active laser self-defence weapon. it is on their 99 MBT. This seems like quite a leap in technology. No western MBT's have such a thing. using laser's to knock out lasers seems ingenious. I believe this could be a major factor on a modern battlefield. Our reliance on lasers in the US army is critical. If the chinese can knock them out we could be in trouble. Do we have any protection against their technology? anyone know if their stuff works or not?

The next main improvment kit for our Leclerc's MBT should have this kind of laser device.
But all I have heard on this technology was about knocking down ennemy optics, not their laser. However laser are often used in conjonction with optical systems, so the main result you described would be the same.

The question is if this Laser is strong enough to overcome the laser protection layer on the western MBT's optics.
Should be a very powerfull laser to be suefull at normal tank figting distance.
If it works it could be a very nice thing.

This is a copy cat on what the Russians came out with many years ago, and the filter that we place on modern western tank optics will defeat it, for a laser to have that kind of power to burn thru our filters they wouldn`t be able to fit the power pack inside the vehicle.

From what I have read, those lasers are designed to confuse IR optics on guidance systems. Their basic system is designed to overwhelm the optics, but the new multi-phasic IR optics used by western nations are designed not to be defeated by such a laser.

I never heard of an active laser on a tank/APC used to disrupt a targeting laser from an aircraft. So I'm not ready really believe that claim.

A reason I believe that most western nations haven't used, is that armor has proved so much more effective then Eastern systems. They major drawback of that armor is that is very heavy. The Leclerc is lighter in armor then M1A2 or Leo 2A6. Thats why it is having such a system installed.

that is basically how the dazzler and shiorta works, this system didn`t fair to good for the Iraqi`s. we have the means to defeat it, (either system). the system for Leclerc is designed to disrupt optics and tankers looking into those optics, the filter system on western optics will be able to defeat this, reason being that Russia tried it on their vehicles and we placed the worst case scenario type of filter on our sighting systems. And the French have not officially called for this system to be placed on the Leclerc. Isn`t it amazing on all the bells and whistles that you can get on your new state of the art tanks if you have enough money, do you ever wonder why the British, Americans and Germans havent placed too much value in these systems, it could be that the techology is not sound enough to place it on our tanks.:)

Or we just don't have the money like the swedes for all the toys you could put onto our tanks. ;) :D

No lasers but all the other little lovely things I would like to see on our Leos. :(

You and I conveyed about this before, my impression is that the LEO 2 A6 is the best tank in the world, the Swedes version is well thought out and has the best in Leo and M1A2 wrapped into one package.:)

I am sure there is an old Death Star in one of our depots so I am not so worried about the whole tank thing. :D
