Looking forward to details, e.g. number of missile cells, turbine selection and how many, etc. I firmly believe this selection reduces the perceived risk factor by the procurement wimps here in Canada wrt the CSC program.

Hunter Class?o_O:confused::confused: What in name of Heavens do they mean by that? There is an area NW of Sydney called the Hunter Valley, so are they going to be named after Valleys? After Provincel areas of Australia such as Darling Downs, Gippsland, New England etc? Was there an Australian Naval Hero with the Surname Hunter?
Looks a Great decison(type 26)

Hunter, Swan, Huon would be good. Speed will have to be increased and it will be interesting to learn of the missile loadout.

Huon's already in use(MCM). why do they have to increase Speed? The days of 35kt Escorts are long gone, doesn't help against MACH 2 AShMs. Like the OPVs range will be more important than a high top speed.
Actually the name Hunter wouldn't be out pf place alongside some of the River names.

Be interesting to find out RAN's requirements, but presumably the 3 contenders largely matched them to various degrees. One can see how Govt then makes the final call also considering wider defence, foreign affairs and trade policy and objectives etc.

Without being privy to the facts, the outcome seems a good one to me - I would have thought the T26 and Fremm being the better ASW contenders.

Whilst unsure whether the following was a factor, I did note one of the senior defpro members here noting a couple of concerns about Navantia recently - I was surprised no-one debated his comments.

As to the future and looking inwards, with a larger production line for the T26 and rationalising of costs I would hope the NZG prioritises ASW over a GP Frigate for its ANZAC replacements.

As long as the Kiwis pay full rate for them.

One of the things that will be interesting is the choice of Close In Weapon Systems. for the major Weapons The MK 41 VLS, MK 45 127mm and MK 32 Torpedo Tubes are almost certainly givens(same as Hobart), will they buy more Phalanx? stick with the 25mm or go to the same 40mm as the OPVs are getting, interesting times.

Put me down as officially astonished. I'm *happy* but astonished.
Put me down as "Not surprised" ... but a little apprehensive.

Actually, it is the least boring option that will no doubt keep this forum speculating on the decision for many years to come.

Certainly, if it lives up to its hype it will be a magnificent ship.

To be named the Hunter Class...
I wonder if this will mean a nod to Forjacs as a block supplier and a part of the build program.
I would much prefer their involvement than Austal.

Yes it does surprise me that the Finance Minister announces the build? I'm assuming that's a cockup by Senator Corman as he won't be too popular with Christopher Pyne who really enjoys the limelight.
I would have thought that the whole scrum led by the PM would announce $35b worth of shipbuilding.

On the selection itself, the ship is a worthy choice, all three were, but I really didn't believe that the gold plated version would win, the government coffers must be better than expected and young Boris must be offering lotsa.

The Prime Minister has announced that Australia will be buying the Type 26 ... The British Prime Minister.

I am not sure the Aussie PM will be happy about that.
