War Against ISIS

Is it only me or does Russia's excuse for sending in SAMs seem a bit lame? Looks to me like they feel the need to beef up their air defenses and perhaps discourage any move to implement a No-Fly Zone? No details on what the system is, whatever it is maybe they're seizing the opportunity to hopefully test it's ability to detect F-22s?

Consider reading the rest of the thread. They have Pantsyr-1S SAM/SPAAG systems, and possibly an S-300/400 system but it's unconfirmed. The reason they're there is the same as the deployment of the Su-30SM. Protection against "accidents" or potential hostile acts from neighboring states.

They also have the Krasuha-4 EW station, and other EW equipment. And they are definitely using this as an opportunity to test some of their newest gear.

So reading between the lines they must be sensing that they are not welcome and have decided not to take chances? Or are they installing equipment for the benefit of Syrian security some time after the Russians leave?

Why would they need this against the rebels Feanor? Would it affect the TOW system or is it just to block enemy communications? Presumably this equipment is relatively short range and so is not likely to affect the US special forces in the NW?

It's designed to protect the Russian base there against a more sophisticated adversary. Like an "accidental" strike by a western power, or anyone else for that matter. So mainly the first.

They don't do either one of those things. Krasuha-4 is an EW station designed to screw with aircraft radars, both fighter jets and specifically AEW. It could also generally make things difficult for anything with a radar in the air, and in some cases even on the ground. As for range, KRET claims (the manufacturer) that it can reach satellites in low earth orbit. Supposedly total range of protection against hostile radars is 300kms. The E-8 J-STARS was specifically named as something this system is designed to counter. There are also vague claims of anti-UAV capabilities.

Well, I wasn't impressed by the article or the pictures. Haven't these optimistic reports about the super new awesome Iraqi army been repeated for a decade? What has actually changed?

Just because some news source has to fill in their quota of government friendly ME reports doesn't mean it's actual news or useful info on the situation.

Reading your post I expected something way more solid than a few soldiers running around. Like a coordinated attack exercise with armor support.

You are entitled to your impressions and expectations. The focus is on what progress is being made after the Mosul debacle. It's a work in progress and 5 brigades is hardly a few soldiers running around.

It was safety training. There's not much surprising about that, it's a fairly minimal level of cooperation. Keep in mind the US and Russia have practiced much closer exchanges and training in general then this.
I think this was a move in the right direction IMO

There's no need for a US/Russian accident in Syria.

Agreed, my thoughts were that same. I think there's no real military necessity for the S300/400 deployment other than an opportunity to test, adjust, and gain experience.

Three. additional thoughts

1. Given this potential, unconfirmed, deployment. I would withdrawal the F22s. Why give anyone the ability to gain tracking experience

2. This further expands the Russian A2D2 line further south beyond Crimea

3. Other than speculation, there's no real combat proof the S300/400 system is actually as incredible as advertised

Common sense really. Feanor, how many of the Russian pilots would speak English? I would guess that not many US pilots would speak Russian.

If but for a woman scorned. Russia seems to have dodged a bullet closer to home. Now that it appears even more certain that a bomb brought down the Metrojet flight, this can only raise the apprehension level on the street re the declared ISIS jihad against Russia. Most commentary has Putin typically doubling down when challenged and he's reportedly considering military intervention in Libya and Yemen. Things are spralling for the worse.

Vladimir Putin's special forces 'foil ISIS terror attack' planned for south Russia | Daily Mail Online

Russian Special Forces have prevented an ISIS terror attack in the south of Russia after uncovering a huge bomb hidden in plastic casks on the side of the road.

The terror attack was scheduled to take place in the village of Kantyshevo in south-western Russia's Republic of Ingushetia.

Russian security services said the bomb contained 3.5 tonnes (7,716 lbs) of explosives.
Members of the crew that worked on the operation stated that all the terrorists that were behind the planting of the bomb have been killed. They named the terrorist leaders as Aslan Byutukaev and Beslan Mahauri, both ISIS militants.

To some degree there is an aspect of sensationalism. By this I mean the pretending that the Byutukaevs of the world weren't already doing this and planning this against Russia. He was behind the 2014 attacks, for example. Many forget how long these attacks against Russia, particularly in said region, have been going on. Dagestan, ingushetia, North Ossetia, Chechnya, areas of the so called ichkerian emirate etc. in some areas it isn't worth counting decades...more like centuries.

The question is what is new, or what is perceived to be new. I don't see more pressure on Putin if it is seen as him dealing with age old issues, and confronting them. The pressure presumably would come from a perception that his intervention has led to them.

Personally I think the tragic reality is that these attacks of this sort would continue without intervention happening first in Syria, with sporadic larger attacks ( Beslan, nord ost, Moscow tube, Grozny attacks, dagestan insurgency, etc etc).

Update.

The Syrians have lost a large number of vehicles in Hama province. If they continue like this, no amount of Russian aid can make up for their losses.

There are two big maybes that Russia is working on in terms of a show of force in the Mediterranean. If the operation in Syria lasts long enough, there's a good chance the Admiral Kuznetsov will show up with MiG-29Ks possibly to participate in the air strikes. And there is likely a Kalibr-PL launch planned from the Rostov-na-Donu Kilo sub. It just made an interesting halt at Kronstadt, for "resupply".

After the recent Kalibr launch from the Caspian fleet, these two would similarly represent major capability gains. Especially considering that the Black Sea Fleet is getting 6 Kilos, and there are now plans for them to go to other fleets as well.
