If they've deployed without an ocean going tug as escort then that's impressive for them - every other russian fleet has taken a tug along for insurance since 2004 - in fact I think their new fleet construct actually factors in a tug as part of the logistics support mix. (which is why they have a shipbuilding plan in place for additional ocean going tugs)

.... there's confidence for you....

basically who cares what the russians do south of the equator. its just posturing.
Indeed... The only real threat here is that this "fleet" is accompanied by an SSN or SSBN and it sinks or runs aground or something, then reactor cracks and contaminates the local marine life... :flash

On a side note, pehaps the G20 could arrange a cage match between Putin the ex KGB Judo master and Abbott the boxing triathlete..... I'd pay good money to see that... :dance

Great training ex for RAN and RAAF. Wouldnt be surprised if there was a Collins in the area.

I hope the general useless Australian press, keep over embellishing this 'visit' and the RAN can capitalise, by squeezing an asset out of this ridiculous posturing.

I was actually discussing this with my wife today and suggested a Collins popping a flare, from it's submerged signal ejector, up between the cruiser and destroyer would be a pretty effective demonstration. Nice, clean, gets the point across but would also show the Australian public just how good our subs are.

Looks like HMAS Sydney & Sirius wil be joining Stuart and Parramatta.
Certainly getting a fair bit of press. Well, we get pretty excited if any ship from any where comes to visit us. They (press) seem to think the move is aggressive, heck they are up near PNG, and we invited their leader here.

Pretty decent surface response, FFG and two Anzacs that we can put into place. Although in a hot situation facing a Vayrag you would really want 1 AWD and 2 of those new 7,000t frigates. Parramatta and Stuart, they haven't been upgraded?

News Corp Australia understands that the government also asked the Navy about the possibility of a Collins Class submarine joining the mission but was told that the nearest boat was in Perth and would not be able to reach the area until well after the G20 summit was over.
Disappointing. Highlighting the need for more subs if we want to be able to respond to something that is not planned far in advance.

I hope we could get some aircraft to fly over.

I imagine an event like this might shine some light onto RAN's future needs.

I highly doubt the GoA would be informing the press, that a Collins would be part of a mixed monitoring group under any circumstances. Separately, that govt response IMV (cynically), indicates the opposite...

AFAIK, HMAS Perth, Anzac and Arunta have been upgraded to ASMD. Arunta is actually conducting tests of the west coast now. Warramunga is/ was in Henderson dry dock undergoing the upgrade, last I read..

One would also think that maybe 1 of the 2 RAAF EP-3C would be in the area 'harvesting', as gf suggested.

HMAS Melbourne, Newcastle and Darwin in FBE currently.

Well Collins availability has been pretty tight recently. They missed some pre-planned celebrations/operations. I would imagine real operational stuff is taking precedence over PR/whim stuff.Coral sea is a long way from the subs home port.

Makes me again think an small east coast sub base might be useful.

So we are nearly half way through? I would have just thought that as part of a mix fleet a ASMD Anzac would be in there. Then again, this isn't a real mission or planned exercise.

Oh I recently read a 4th ship is on standby and 3 PC-3 are operating out of qld.

I have often wondered why we don't don't have a small sub pen in Eastern or Northern Australia! I assume it is because it would be venerable to preemptive strike or sabotage operations by opposing special forces... or perhaps it is the topography of the ocean floor or the warm water... it could also be that the patrol paths are too easily tracked from those areas...

Maybe there is one....

It certainly seems odd given that one of the key challenges for our Submarines is range.... yet we put the operating base all the way down in Perth...

I seriously would not be taking any public commentary about where the subs are as meaningful

apart from the fact that when they're out, very few people are aware of where they are - so uniformed commentary about their current location or mission set is just trite nonsense

The news corp quote seems particularly dodgy, it is "news understands the government asked defense". Seems like a government source or even worse, a non government source - ie friend of a friend of someone who lives next to overheard.... News did the obvious thing and fact checked with nobody.

I have no doubt there is at least one sub in WA/Perth region, Rankin was has the ANZAC ceremony.

As was a Japanese destroyer.

Will be interesting where the Russians will go. Some say Antarctica, some say South Korea. I wonder if after the G20 they might take a stroll south..

Maybe there is one....
Australian subs are/have been apparently frequent sights in Singapore.

Correct, do people really think Defence or the PM would say "Hey yeah we have one following them right now, or, there is actually a Virginia out there keeping an eye on them for us"

Keep it real people, but I still believe it reinforces the need for some hulls on the East Coast though

Cheers

A few reasons:
1) Because she doesnt commission for another two weeks.
2) Because the RAN/Army don't have the Helicopter inventory to fit her out properly into a Sea Control Ship.
3) Because the 2-4 Frigates on station or enroute are sufficient for showing the flag.

slightly off topic

Is it a coincidence HMAS Rankin is in Hobart, around the same time the Chinese President visits Tasmania ?

Hey guys I came across a couple of articles today regarding the RAN.

First one talks about the feasibility of F35B of the Canberras and the likelyhood of it happening:
F-35 jump jets for navy landing ships not worth the cost, study finds - 9news.com.au

The second one talks about the german option for the subs seemingly gaining some traction too:
No Cookies | Herald Sun

Now I realise that that these are coming from mainstream media hopefully they were somewhat diligent in getting some sources this time.
