Some of the it is likely due to the differences in crewing doctrine between the US and allied navies. The US tends to have crew dedicated to damage control while other navies (RN, RAN, etc) seem to have damage control performed by crew as an additional function.

I agree that the USN does seem to use less automation than others, which could cause crew requirements to be even higher,
Well no to all of the above. The main reason the Virginia class has a larger crew is has three shifts like other US-UK nuclear submarines. Whereas Collins like most DE boats only has two shifts. One of the issues in favour for domestic design of a SEA 1000 boat is the ability to provide a three shift crew.

First you will have to convince the old dogs that adequate rest time does not equate to boredom. They have yet to realise that you will decrease not increase separation rates if you remove physical exhaustion and sleep deprivation from the regular day of a submariner.

Any news on the HMAS Canberra/Blue Marlin front? The last I heard they were anchored off Portarlington somewhere, definitely not at Williamstown this afternoon.

So the idea is too lease a nuke, and then presumably get the submarine maintained by the US as well.

Manning submarines has always been a big issue with our navy, so why not go the full hog and pay the US to man the submarines as well ?

All we would have to do then is enter into similar arrangements with other ships ... the leasing of the spanish tanker Cantabria comes to mind here ... and we could disband the navy completely.

Sarcasm off.

We were supposed to have learnt from the probs that caused UK Govt and the RN grief. You'd have to be an optimist to say that we have.
I hope for the sake of the Navy and the sake of Australia that we do build a trouble free future submarine. The government seem to do you guys no favours when you advise them and they do not listen.Must be like talking to a wall

It was to be around a fortnight from initial arrival to the completion of the undocking and movement to Williamstown.

I can't speak for US practice, but on RN SSNs only nuclear propulsion watchkeepers are on a three watch system. Other watchkeepers are on a two watch system.

Like "These subs don't carry nuclear weapons ..." They carry the Tomahawk which IIRC is quite capable of being armed with a nuclear warhead.
They don't actively carry nuclear weapons. Nuclear armed Tomahawk was withdrawn from deployment in the 90s, though it remains available in storage for the moment.

Blue Marlin is still berthed at Geelong Port being prepared to unload Canberra. I'd imagine weather will also play it's part, I'd be very surprised if they try and unload her with a southerly blowing.

I know I am going to be impressed by the Canberra when she is completed, but at the moment I am awed by the Blue Marlin. I am waiting for the videos and pictures of Canberra floating off the Blue Marlin. Then I will have to edit the videos I am loaded to one video for one very interesting journey.

The Blue Marlin does not look much, but it is awesome in what it does. Would our ship be the largest that Blue Marlin has carried I wonder?

Story this morning. Sailors lured by mining cash

Navy techical sailors lured by mine cash | thetelegraph.com.au

Also had a lot about the nonavailability of surface ships.

Looks like the navy could really use some of those new ships. The LHD news didn't last long and its back to grumpy pants sad navy stories.
hell I'd serve with the RAN if I could. They weren't interested in any of what I did with the USN however :(

I'm curious to see how the rest of this decade and the 20s will turn out for the RAN and the rest of the Pacific powers. Come 2016 we'll see a new face for POTUS, China will have aircraft on ex-Varyag, DPRK will be changing under its new leader for better or worse, an all around greater emphasis for traditional powers like Russia etc etc

I noticed that the hull of HMAS Canberra was docked at Williamstown this afternoon, it looks quite enormous driving over the Westgate bridge! No mention of it anywhere in the news though.

Will try and get some pics.

This video from BAE is quite nice, one thing that puzzles me watching it, is that, either the superstructure or the hull seem to be the other way around?! But what do I know.

Very nice video anyhow.

Regards.
