Help! Effectiveness of VLTs?

I'm a civilian researching Kwikpoint's Visual Language Translator Guides. I know that they're standard issue, but do soldiers actually use them? Do they work? I've had a rough time trying to find someone who can tell me. Would appreciate any insights or stories related to their use in the field.

It would really help if you could tell us which soldiers you are referring to.

In the US we call it a "pointy talky". I never carried or used one but my job limits contact with locals and never had need. I'll ask some of my guys that have done tours as grunts.

I suppose I am most hoping to hear from soldiers who used the guides to interact with local natives in Afghanistan and Iraq.
