just to point out, went for a run past Waterhen today, theres only two minehunters in...i gather the two that are mothballed, so im guessing they are at sea doing training...something they havent done according to the media...

Not quite correct the article said "Defence says its minehunters have only trained four times in the past four years in the vital technique of "influence" minesweeping where minehunters use acoustic and magnetic signals to detonate emplaced mines."

And yes a walk past Waterhen will reveal exactly that. They are not there. A quick check of the FAS will tell you where they are. They are always pretty busy, however not doing always what they were intended to do, and that's MCM.

Are the Spanish LCM's roll-on, roll-off? Can the tailgate be dropped to allow for them to be loaded from the rear or will they have to be reversed out of the dock each time? Looks from the image that the tail might be hinged allowing you to drive through from one LCM onto another if they were reversed in stern facing the loading ships ramp.

Yes the LCM-1E are Roll On, Roll Off....I cant think of any modern LCM that isn't. But to the other part of your question the bow of the LCM will always face the beach for loading (The "Beach" is the term used to describe the ramp from the dock to the vehicle deck).

In the Video @2.52 minutes as the Landing craft comes into the dock of the LHD, is that a "rubber compound" on the LHD walls or timber? Just curious

Its very impressive to see all the "I" beams that make up the decks structure.They must be 500mm deep or so.Also noted that the I beams have "oval cut outs" ,is this to allow for extra services/conduit to be run as needed?

What fire fighting equipment dose the LHD have? fire hose, a deluge system IE sprinkler heads that activate if there is a fire on board? Sorry for the questions its the builder in me

The sides of and bottom of all Docks including the LHD's (That I can think of) are made from timber mate. Durable, Pliable and easily replaced.

when my father served on Sydney (carrier, 1950's) they were always bringing gear home on it. I've got a few happy snaps of officers who managed to get cars on board and bought home a couple of citroen 15CV's

Dutyfree motorcycles?

I doubt there would be any ADR issues except possibly always on lights....Unfortunately import restrictions prevent private importation of vehicles in most cases I believe, even if the RAN allowed it when the ship was travelling light.

Canberra class

Hi Guys I see today that our new Marine contingent is ready for deployment and that around 300 will be at sea at all times allowing for another 300 to be in training and another 300 on leave. But if needed all to be sent on one of our great new ships.
I was just wondering what else goes to sea in our LHD's Canberra class?

So I am guessing the 300 troops but what else? what air wing will be at sea? any tigers? Will the ships have a default deployment arrangement or will they be set up according to what they are doing and where they are going?

Another rubbish story from this guy (IMHO), we must also be operating AAV's now as per the picture.

"This force will be known as an Amphibious Ready Element. Well actually there is a lot of important information in that article. The Army has announced which model they will follow to form the ARG. They have chosen option 1 of 3 which is to allocate a single battlegroup the specialist role. Makes sense.

Reading the FAS/FGP(Fleet Activity Shedule) for the Choules, a fair bit next year.
not counting short notice events, the army will be conducting a lot of training with her and get ready for the LHDs.

It's likely, but not absolutely guaranteed. They've done the bulk of the Exercise Sea Lion amphibious exercises so they are probably the most comfortable in the role but who knows?

They might have given it to 3RAR to mollify them a bit after losing their precious airborne role?
