The new Chile OPVs would make wonderful new additions to the Uruguay navy. They fit the patrolling mission well... At least the government understands the needs to protect their maritime seas and approaches...

Look at this news:

Uruguayan Naval Aviation detected 12 illegal fishing
Thursday June 24, 2010 00:00

Equipped now with a Nikon D-3000 (GPS) to record violations with sufficient precision, shortly after returning to active duty, the Navy 200T Raytheon B-871, on patrol duty conventional lateral northeast sector of the territorial sea Uruguay, on June 22 detected at least a dozen boats of fishing illegally in their jurisdiction.

They were flown and interrogated by one of the six crew of the aircraft, who managed the withdrawal of the same into Brazilian waters, without incident. At the same time, other ships were recognized and confirmed their national licenses.

The air patrol activities, rather thinned in recent times by various shortcomings, revealed a fundamental and assist in wealth preservation Uruguayan fishes, and have no adequate means of comptroller the country loses about 55 billion dollars annually and the risk of introduction or disposal at sea of substances or dangerous persons, drugs and illegal weapons
(Javier Bonilla)

Comment: apparently defending our waters from illegal fishing Brazilians is urgent. Identified only from the air does not reach this time were 12, but the more will they be? You will not need a patrol through an ocean patrol so that they think twice about fishing in our waters again?

Philippine Navy eyeing purchase from US

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Navy on Sunday said it was in talks with the United States government to buy a second-hand Coast Guard cutter to upgrade its ageing fleet.

Navy chief Rear Admiral Alexander Pama said the 380-feet Hamilton class vessel, which he did not name, would significantly boost Manila's capability to patrol its archipelago.

"We are actively discussing with the US government the possible acquisition of the Hamilton class," he said.

Now that Trinidad and Tobago have cancelled their three British newly built OPVs, it might be a good idea to buy them instead... Of course this will cost much more, but they should be suitable for EEZ fishery patrols....

It appears from the Bangladesh thread that they may be buying the recently built corvettes/OPVs that Brunei cancelled... There are other possibilities besides the Hamilton class high endurance cutters, or OPVs...

As noted the Philippines are also interested in buying some of the old Hamilton class cutters as well as Uruguay... I believe the Hamiltons will last another ten or more years until the Famous/Bear class medium endurance cutters might be paid off...

In the next five years the US Coast Guard should have delivery of their 7 new NSC Bertholf class high endurance cutters.,, At that time the smaller OPCs are planned to start building up to 25 ships to replace the Reliance and Famous/Bear classes of medium endurance cutters...

If both of these nations decide on Hamiltons, choose wisely... Some of them are in very bad shape, but there are some in pretty good shape...

Sea Toby,

Care to share your thoughts about which ships are worse off than others?
The USCG does these studies choosing which one to decommission first. If it were up to me I would pick those ships which will decommission two years from now. Buy a bad one now, and buy a few more later, and use the one you buy now for spares in the future...

Considering the age of the Hamiltons, it will be wise to buy at least one for spares... Keep in mind while the Hamiltons are old, they were given a SLEP around 20 years ago, so their electronics aren't 40 years old. I am sure with the FMS program the US will also invest in a refit before selling them as part of the deal... But as the Aussies found out with the Newport LSTs, that refit won't necessarily patch their old worn hulls...

If the nation chooses to go the used route with the Hamiltons, they will most likely do the same with the Famous/Bears when they strike more than ten years from now... Even with the Bears I would buy at least one for spares...

Thanks for your thoughts Sea Toby. Were you in the USCG by any chance?

====== ~~~ ======

Does anyone here have any information about the status of the SQS-38 hull-mounted sonars that were removed from the Hamiltons in the early 90s?

Were they kept in storage in accordance with original plan of keeping them at the ready in case the coast guard ever needed to regenerate its ASW capability?

Or have they been sold/scrapped to avoid storage costs?

Keep in mind population figures. Brazil 192 million, Uruguay 3.5 million. Huge difference, Uruguay has less population than New Zealand. The Hamilton class cutters will serve their purposes for a price which can't be beat...
I read in our news paper in the Philippines that The Phil. Navy will also acquire/purchase on o f the USCG Hamilton class, is it reliable or good to be use in patrolling Phil. waters.

For EEZ patrols yes, the ships in pretty good shape will be able to do that for a while, long enough until the Famous/Bears strike ten years from now in the future... But the Hamiltons are not warships, they won't be able to face the Chinese navy... I take the attitude if they are good enough to do the fishery patrols in the rough and tough Bering Sea, see the Discovery channel's Deadliest Catch series, they are good enough to patrol the seas around the Philippines...

As I have noted before some of the Hamiltons are in pretty good shape, while others are not... All I can say is choose wisely.... But I am sure those that are not in good shape can be used as a spares hulk...

Until last year when the first new NSC cutter, Bertholf was commissioned, the twelve Hamiltons represented the best long range cutters of the US Coast Guard... They have seen action in the Bering Sea, WestPac, and the Persian Gulf/Arabian Sea...

yes, i read it in inquirer.net/news. It would be a morale booster to the Navy personnel even thought it is second hand, according to the news it is the most modern warship of the Navy Fleet, cause almost of the ship are world war two vintage only small number are really bit younger in terms of use

Actually there are 2 Aguinaldo class patrol boats in active service with the PN already and are the only locally built vessels but a 3rd one will be launch around October, it will be a LCU and bigger than the 2 previous 44 meter ships design to transport logistics and troops...

DEFENSE STUDIES: Navy Set to Launch First Locally Made Vessel

P.S. There are also 3 locally built MPAC by Propmech of Subic Bay that was delivered back in 2009 to the PN and another 3 units is schedule for turnover by end of 2011...
