I think the July 1st sail date was BS from some netizins in the first place... it's not like the PLAN announced it or anything.

It just sounded like a good date seeing as it was the CCP's 90th anniversary. I wouldn't trust the August date too much either.

Looks like the Varyag is planned for its first trails tomorrow.

Pictures from last couple of days shows that the carrier has been totaly striped from construction material, the flight deck has been painted with none-skid paint and the engiens are being tested.

Lots of very recent pictures, yesterday and today it would appear. It seems the Chinese are getting ready to ship out soon. Also found a article quoting Navy admiral? stating 40 airframes will be stationed on board, more than likely after sea trials and such.

She looks ready. Engines work, deck finished, construction materials removed. She looks pretty impressive actually. She still has that soviet ship style but seems cleaner. Can’t be long. If we were to place wagers, I bet 2 weeks.

She has 7 ciws mounts -- 3 type 1030's, 4 fl3000n turrets (ram type) -- so yes varyag certainly does
you misunderstood his question, the Varyags "sister ship" the Admiral Kuznetsov carries 12 shipwreck anti-ship missiles. does Varyag still have that capability or have they been removed?

I agree, she is new so she doesn't have that "weathered" look Russian boats have which is normal but you still see the Russian influence.

I think the anti ship missiles have been removed to create more space.

No, most sources say that they were removed to expand the hangar. Rumor has it the Russians are going to do the same thing with the Kuzentsov.

In that case, no they are not retained. Looks like plan is adopting more of a USN type of carrier operation.

Thanks, the consensus seems to be the cruise missiles have been removed. This doesn't necessarily mean the carrier will be utilized similar to the US CVNs though.
So long as the Chinese and Russian carriers dispense with catapults, their aircraft will be constrained in terms of fuel and weapons loads. Most likely, they will be used to provide defensive air cover for the fleet. US carriers excel as offensive juggernauts.

Or it could be, as stated by China in the press, that they intend to use the ship as a training vessel for carrier operations and to accumulate operational experience, probably involving multiple modifications over the years. After all, the other carrier producing nations have decades to experience with different designs to determine what does and does not work, not the general layout, but all the ‘fiddly bits’ that are not obvious without the experience to know what is important.

They could have decided, in that case, that the anti-missiles were just one more hassle they could do without. :)

I think the general consensus has become using carriers airwings as the offensive armament of the ship. If the enemy is close enough that the carrier needs to launch Antiship missiles then the rest of the BG would be inrange and they could take care of it. Plus that means they are already to close.

I think these chinese are planning for BG based on the US design also. The general layout of the upcoming fleet makes sense to.

China is dependent upon the sea. It must have a strong Navy and the US has shown where power lies atleast for the last 70 or so years. Fleet carriers.

Hell take a look at the med. The Enterprise could have done atleast twice what the spanish or french carriers could do.

Good point and a reason i said "Atleast". Fleet carriers are expensive and very, very, big. But pound for pound are for more powerful than any smaller midsize carrier.

Which should hardly be surprising given that the Enterprise has more than 1.5x their combined displacement. :D

Indeed. I wonder where they'll put the roulette wheels and baccarat tables?
That thing was bought supposedly to be converted into a casino and supposedly the contract forbade it from military use.

I can't think of anyone, let alone those who do mil analysis for a job who thought that it was going to stay as a floating casino...
