The white paper released by the government last year is flawed as it failed to ask the most important question, how do we defend NZ. If we don't know how we are going to defend NZ how are we going to structure our Defence Forces correctly?
Currently a nation could simply fly into our international airports using their national airline take the nearest port and bring in their heavy equipment by commercial shipping and there is nothing we could do. We would be over-run before help could arrive. without an air combat ability we are defenceless. With one combat soldier per 5 to 10 km of coast line, not counting the internal area the army cannot defend us and 2 frigates cannot do it, but the cancelled f16's would have except for those countries with large aircraft carriers, which are few and far between.
Given the worlds increasing population and decreasing resources plus global warming sooner or later someone will want this well watered empty land
