Active defense system for A/C

Hi all,

I've checked into this forum on/off over the years, but have never voiced an opinion or created a post. So please bear with me.

I'm not sure if this has ever been discussed, but are thereany APS in development for A/C out there. We have Chaff/flares/towed decoys/etc., but what about an anti- AA missile system that can be fitted to Fighter/attack aircraft.

You think that would be a logical evolution in air combat, as it has benn fielded in modern ground combat vehicles (ARENA APS for example).

With 60 G turning missiles/modern radar/heat seekers and such, is it not safe to assume that you are more than likely to face a missile that you cannot decoy or evade, so you best destroy it at some safe distance from your A/C. A sort of Point defense system.

Has anyone heard of anything like this?

No, I was implying some sort of rear facing pod/attachment to the aircraft fusalage.

Think of a rear facing pod that would launch/eject a projectile that would explode in the path of an incoming missile a safe distance away from the fast moving jet. Warhead would only need to be big enough to disrupt missile and/or destroy ther guidance system. Maybe holding a dozen or so charges?

most towed arrays do something like that, in the event they cant jam the incoming missile, they will place themselves between the missile and jet...

We will see the first point defense systems for high priority aircraft within twenty years. They are called lasers and or microwave weapons. They will be first seen in large aircraft like bombers and gunships and later for fighter/boomers. People are already looking in to eventually refitting the F-35. The F-35b variant has a directly driven drive shaft for the lift fan that can siphon off tremendous amounts of power from the jet engine. It is a natural way to get the electoral energy necessary to drive a laser, microwave or EMP weapon. There will be duel use weapons not decanted soley to point defense but still very effective. The kind of point defense systems that require projectiles will never meet the cost or wait requirement for aircraft.
