Universal Missile System - Tornado?

So I've been exploring rumors about a new universal missile system for the Russian Army, called Tornado (variants apparently include Tornado-S and Tornado-G). It's supposedly a surface-surface missile system that will combine tactical missile (similar to the Iskander) capability, with MLRS capability, and be able to fire several calibers of munitions, with rumors and uncofirmed sources claiming either 122 and 300mm or 220 and 300mm (either combining Grad and Smerch, or Uragan and Smerch munitions). It's possible that the two variants will be different in the munitions used.

The rather shifty sources I've found are as follows

alternathistory: СиÑтема залпового Ð¾Ð³Ð½Ñ Â«Ð¢Ð¾Ñ€Ð½Ð°Ð´Ð¾Â». РоÑÑиÑ.

Âåñòè.Ru: "Òîðíàäî" çàðîæäàåòñÿ â Òóëå

Major capability claims include mid-course sat-nav (nothing new, current Smerch munitions already have some mid-course correction), multi-munition or dual-munition use, and increased range compared to the current iirc 90km on the Smerch.

Has anyone heard anything?

Good Ol Lenta

I just read the article as well.. However, there is not much about Tornado-G, my question is what is the purpose of a G definition applies to..

-г гвардейская ? ie Guards edition, which sounds stupid.

Anyway its a wait and see..

Cheers Feanor.

Aaaaaaaaand the rumor becomes a reality. The Tornado system will be a new MLRS replacing the BM-21 grad in the RSZO Btlns of Motor-Rifles and Tank Brigades.

It looks like, despite developing modernized Grad variants, the Land Forces prefer something new and shiny.

Well previously there were mention of two systems, the Tornado-G and Tornado-S. Maybe Tornado-Grad and Tornado-Smerch?

The Tornado-G could be BM-21 and 27 replacement, giving the MLRS btlns of MRBde and TBdes extra reach and extra punch, while the Tornado-S would effectively extend the strike range of ArtyBdes to the operational-tactical level (as is the range of the Smerch approches that of the Tochkas).

So its like an upgraded version of smerch with larger rockets cabable of carrying multi-munition to a longer range. Sounds nice.

AFAIK, India is planning a longer version of pinaka mbrl rumored to have pretty much the same capabilities.

These may be photos of the Tornado-G. Also the numbers delivered should be around 36, making for two MLRS Arty Btlns.

The Tornado-G is an upgrade of the Grad MLRS using a new rocket, a new automatic launcher, and a new digital FCS. The details are unclear, but the range is supposed to be extended, as well as the power of the missiles. It will be unified with the Tornado-S system in regards to chassis, guidance systems, and the FCS. So while I'm not 100% sure at this point, but it seems that that the earlier surfaced photos of a 6-packet Smerch system on a Kamaz chassis, were the prototypes for the Tornado-S.
