My statement remains correct. I did not say that the top speed of a carrier is 40 knots I said that it was highly classified. I know how fast a fast attack nuclear sub can go. I even know how fast the old three screw Russian sub (I forget the class name, it was not considered successful design and is now long out of service, where the center screw was connected a giant hydrogen peroxide generator for use as get-a-way speed). As for the Mayaguez incident, I do not know if she had a Sub as an escort or not. We were on our way to Perth Austria for a liberty port call and if there was a sub in escort it wasn’t on the liberty call list. But as an escort, if it was doing 40 knots to keep up with the Cora Sea it was flying blind. At that speed it could see or hear anything.A SSN or SSBN may have a higher top speed than a nuclear powered carrier. No facts but both would go faster than 40 kts, proberly faster than 50kts.
And a SSBN has a pretty high destructive value too.. However they are not really comparible. I would assume the carrier group would have had a SSN in the area, so I would assume none of the surface escorts could keep up but a sub surface one might..
