Firstly... Yeah until you turn 18 you need to have everything signed by your parent/s/caregiver

Secondly... Don't sweat the YOU session one bit, its easy as pie, but do keep exercising (i'm sure you've found the ADFs fitness brochure)
and a little maths study doesn't hurt.

Thirdly... your YOU session will go something like this.

1. you arrive they double check your paperwork/identity etc.
2.you head into a room to do some tests (all multiple choice) this determines What jobs you can do.
3. Trip to the Nurse to verify some medical information eg. asthma etc.
4. you'll head off with a DFR (defence force recruiting) member who'll give you a piece of paper saying all the jobs you can do. Then you select your preferences but keep in mind you can add subtract or otherwise change them Whenever you want just give them a call.

Thanks for answering this - the majority of army members present enlisted when the .303 was replacing the Martini-Henry - I'd certainly have no clues now.

Ironically, my ex wife was posted at Defence Paramatta 2 years ago - I suggested that someone on the team (even her) get online and provide accurate and timely feedback - still, I'm guessing that's one of the reason's she's my 'ex' - no idea about the bigger picture...

I went Through the YOU day at the begining of the year....

I've done the medical but not the Psycho yet.
The medical is NOT strip down to the nude and get a once over twice, as I was told.
It's simply: After 1-3 hours of waiting (expect a lot of waiting while appling) you'll finally get to do it, a five minute hearing test, a quick lung capacity test (quick hard burst and then keep breathing for as long as you can), and colour blind test and pea in a cup. eventually you'll see a doctor who'll go over all your medical history and ask you to strip down to your undies lay on a bed while he/she tests your nerves and bends your legs/Arms asks you to do a few push-ups and sit-ups stretches etc.
Nothing scary....
the Psycho i've been told is the worse part, they'll pick apart everything ask you difficult question like "would you shoot someone?" or " are you SURE you're good enough?" etc.

YOU is a very easy introduction.

The skills testing has a lot of maths and english language component. Just watch your time, read the instructions and don't space out. Its simular to a lot of IQ tests, but with less of a focus on pattern recoginition.

Oh you don't get a score either, just which jobs you can go for. I was disapointed at that fact because Im pretty sure I did pretty well, and I qualified for all positions. I also finished the test 2nd fastest in the group (one other guy got up and left with ~15mins left which seemed impossibly quick).

The medical is very easy, but be sure your BMI is okay, if your young that shoudn't be a problem, I was 5kg off my BMI limit, which I was told to lose before going back otherwise I don't get in on medical grounds. I should have dehydrated myself but was concerned it would impact on my mental test performance.

The interview portion was friendly, but no new information for me (it really isn't the place to ask any questions you don't already know the answer to). They just kind of high fived me and said sign up. I think my background story in a few short sentences told them everything they wanted to hear, for a younger recruit they might enquire about your commitment, capabilities, resilliance etc.

I also think they do a bit of observation while your waiting around, I know if I was recruiting you could tell a lot about the group. The loners, the out going personalities, the stupid. Some people couldn't read the instructions and had not started the computer test when I had finished.

Yeh, its a bit silly. She (the nurse) couldn't read my height so I could have boosted my self a few cm and I would have been alright, dam my honesty. It didn't affect me on my YOU and it was pretty close, but I have to lose a few Kg before continuing. It would have been better to be under.

In my interview it didn't seem to be a big issue, it was barely mentioned. A persons weight and fitness is a fluid thing, and can be changed.

I should tie down a timeframe for my next step.. and work on my fitness..
