With the apparent Maoist attacks in the north, what do you thik is the real threat to commonwealth athletes during the games ? How seriously is India taking the threat and what are they putting in place to protect the athletes of the Commonwealth ??
The Maoists operate in a very different region in India, they are present in rural and tribal areas with very less presence in urban environments. New Delhi which along with Noida and Gurgaon representing the NCR (National Capital Region) could be more prone to attacks from terrorist groups like LeT etc. There was a bomb attack a few years ago (2004 or 2005 IIRC) in the very busy Sarojini market. Such bombings and 26/11 style attacks are more expected than an attack by Maoists. However given the high profile nature of the Commonwealth Games the city has been accorded high security status and has multi level, multi agency security cover, the Maosist are trying to distance themselves away from the attack against civilians / non-combatants they are on the backfoot trying to put space between themselves and the train derailment of day before, as a purported 'people's movement' they have no idelogical need to attack any more non-combatants. Around 10000 police and paramilitary forces will be deployed for the event. With the apparent Maoist attacks in the north, what do you thik is the real threat to commonwealth athletes during the games ? Thankyou for the information, was just a curiosity as these type of events tend to attract the opportunist. Fingers crossed nothing will happen, I look forward to watching the games and think it is going to be a great thing for India to show the Commonwealth and the world how proud they areThe Maoists operate in a very different region in India, they are present in rural and tribal areas with very less presence in urban environments.
