Indian Army is Looking for 'Light Tanks' for Mountain areas

Indian Army to take on 300 light tanks for deployment on China border

With a part of effort been witnessed to strengthen the capabilities, the Indian Army is looking to develop 300 light tanks for deployment in the mountainous region of the border with China and Pakistan.

The procedure regarding acquisition of tanks is been initiated with the (RFI) Request for Information.

The light tanks are intended to be deployed in the mountainous region of Arunachal Pradesh in the north-east and Jammu and Kashmir in the north region. Reason being part of a mechanized force in the high altitude region, it has been considered that the heavy tanks cannot reach at heights.

The requirements for the 300 Tank Order is as below
Weight - 22 tons+ Light Tank
Capable of operating at a height of 3000 mtrs
Attack Capability of destroying MBTs and other Armoured Vehicles at a range of 2kms
Ablity to fire high-explosive anti-tank shells and guided missiles.

What are the modern options for the Indian Army to fill this requirement ?

Its a Super Hind yes another Hind for those who are like hell not let me state my case. Hind as the Russian's call it is GLOBALY tested from Africa to Europe from Middle east to Middle of no where ones called the Devils charriet by the Afgans its is not only feared but it can out do any attack chopper out there in the words and as you can c on this advance super hidn it armed to the tooth not only in air to air mode but a first multi role chopper that can do precise boming that no other copper in the worlds can if get about 20 of there and place them on our easter front with a about give of take 60,000 to 110,000 troops China is going to have one hell of a time coming up with a good come back in the region as well as as our western border.

It is built to Kill and a record of survival and has a soul of the devil if its not broken do not fix it but in this case not only its a armored troop carrier but also a very very very lethal machine that is 2nd to none in the world is a work horse as well a Record setter and made 100% to do the job right.

I have just recently read an article in the Far Eastern Economic Review that China's pressure on the Arunachal Pradesh region has increased in recent times, and that the Chinese front is hotter right now than the Pakistani front. According to that article there were 270 violations to the Indian line-of-control in that area and 2.285 incidents of "aggressive border patrolling" by Chinese units in 2008. So it seems wise for India to beef up it's military presence in Arunachal Pradesh.

But the requirements are somewhat confusing to me. They write "light tank", yet the other requirements make it sound more like they are looking for a light armored vehicle with the capability to launch ATGM.

that looks like a mosquito on steroids.:p:

i think india should go in for maybe a hundred mi-28havocs or ka-52's supplemented by the lch and a couple of hundred of wsi dhruv and loh.that will give the indian army a very formidable tank busting and coin capability.

I am not sure India needs too many heavy attack choppers for eastern frontier. the heavy choppers dont perform too well on those altitudes. something like LCH is a much more appropriate for that situation.

The light tanks could be interesting. I think we will see 2S25 Sprut from russia or, if india designs it by themselves, a indian 120mm canon with LAHAT missiles would be available on any number of light platforms (Sadly, i believe it would be the BMP wich india produces themselves already for several newvehicles.). There are the usual western contenders of course, lead by the italian Centauro. Will be interesting...

I dont believe there is any collaboration of Indian army with US in these projects. The only US made thing can be microprocessor chips in handheld devices which we dont have the capability to fabricate apart from that nothing US, I have seen these products made by DRDO 2 years back. No israeli collaboration either in these projects as far as i know atleast 3 years back.
Cheers,
Well i asked one of my relative about the same and came to know tht there is no collaboration with either Us or Israel. The person i talked to is a D.R.D.O employee and knows preety well whts goin on in D.R.D.O. what i came to know is exactly the same as said by u. i agree.;)

I dont know if India has a tank in this category keeping in mind India's futuristic aspirations as far as acquisitions are concerned. Also the BMP doesnt qualify as a tank does it. The ATGM could be Lahat / Nag. So maybe i the future NAMICA could see deployment in the areas if it can operate at those heights

NAMICA is based on the BMP II chassis so I dont think there are any concerns regarding its deployablity. If you have been to the region you will see that heavy armour cant achieve much in those heights. light armour is the key!

Light Armour is the requirement (as compared to an MBT) of the IA, however any tank on the BMP chasis would not (DRDO did experiment with the BMP and T-72, T-55 turrets etc) fit the requirement of a 'modern tank' esp with what has happened with Arjun MBT so far. One of the key requirements the IA issued was the capability to fire ATGM @ range of 2 kms which means that IA is projecting future conflicts where enemy tanks can be expected in the area, which i why i think the light tanks can be acompanied by NAMICAs

i agree with you,but the heavy helicopters would be very usefull on the western front ,where their heavy armour would give them excellent protection ,in the open terrain of rajasthan, gujarat and punjab, and their heavier weapon load and superior targetting capability will make them a very potent adversary.

Yes and I feel that the Army Aviation wing should have some of these helo directly attached to the Armoured Strike Corps to play the role of COAS. Combat helos would also be important to play the role of escorting transport helos engaged in Spec Ops or behind the enemy line ops.

Do you know if the Army currently has any Mi-35 series. I know that the IAF definetely has about 20, but regarding the army i have read conflicting inputs

as far as i know,it is the indian air force which operates the mi-32's ,the army only operates the chetaks, cheetah's,dhruvs and the lancers.

Well that means that the Indian Army doesnt even have a single Attack Helo, blows for a army of a million men. Even pakistan army has about 40 and is planning for atleast 20 more or so. Is the new helos for which the RFI has been issued (boeing rcently submitted its bid for the Apache Longbow and Chinnok transports) for the IA or the IAF ? Looks like both are placing their bets on the LCH. I think its poor planning on part of the MoD (and the defence forces to tow that line) to place all trust on the LCH (yet to fly), it should actualy hedge by getting significant numbers more from the global market

i dont see any drawback in that ,considering that the co-operation and the inter operability between the indian army and the indian airforce is excellent as seen from the previous wars and has only been improved since then, this co-operation is further enhanced by joint excercises between the indian airforce and the indian army as well as joint operations including the peacekeeping operations and the coin operations.

i believe india currently has around 60 mi-32's upgraded by israel.india also intends to acquire heavy attack helicopters(at least 20) and the lch(at least 60),both these would be placed under the indian air force.

indian army currently operates wsi dhruv(weapon system integrated dhruv),which are equipped with heavy anti-tank missiles(helina missiles are being developed to arm these wsi-dhruvs as well as the lch ,this missile is the air launched version of the nag anti-tank missile having a range of 6kms ,heli stands for helicopter launched nag) and also is equipped with a 20mm giat cannon and air to air mistral missiles (indian army intends to acquire about 40 of them),india army also operates upto 40 lancer light attack helicopters for coin roles, fire support and aop roles.

lancer helicopters are upgraded and uprated version of the cheetah helicopter developed by the hal, these are likely to be replaced by the loh(light observation helicopters) for which tenders have already been issued, indian army plans to induct about 200 of them.

so indian army has adequate firepower.

Its good if the different arms of a military are having great interoperability. But it is better if there is a seperation esp wrt Spec Ops where the services tend to keep the ops classified and hesitate to share any info. Any army (wih resources that is) would want to have its own assets which is essential to its operations, which is why the Indian Army has its own Aviation wing where a lot of same assets are also available with the IAF, like the Mil Mi-8/17s both forces operate this helo. Most modern armies do have their own attack choppers under their own operational command

What is this Mil Mi-32 you keep referring to - the attack choppers are Mil Mi-24/25/35 and the transport ones are Mil Mi-8/17 and Mil Mi-26 apart from the Cheetahs, Chetans, Chetaks and Dhruvs. As per wiki Mi-32 is a helo design which never was created.

I read somewhere that the IA as well as the IAF hav paced orders for the LCH (or will). Also i dont think a pure heavy attack helo platform can be replaced with armed tactical choppers, which technicaly is not an attack chopper but rather an armed helo platform. (Although the WSI Dhruv does look great :)) The heavy attack chopper has more firepower, has better and greater armour and more well protected with various defence systems and would logicaly be better suited for the attack role than the others which should play the tactical role or armed transport role. The lancers and chetaks have got to be long replaced we are way behind there.

I dont get it isnt the Indian Army building a Combat Aviation Brigade and for which is the only armed platform going to be the WSI Dhruv ?? Its just weird logic or no logic. Do you know if the Paratroopers or the NSG has acquired its own dedicated Air Assets
