Some Metal Storm ideas

Always nice to read your atricles on your site, I have to say your a top notch reporter/commentator on defence matters. Another idea would be to have a 40mm claymore system, imagine activating a claymore to have it blast out in 180 degree's with HE and AP grenades...

what about having the barrel itself as the magazine, just remove the barrel via a magazine change and stick a new one on?

I think that the weight of the barrels, combined with the impossibility of "topping up" the ammo, would be the drawbacks.

3 shot stand alon grenade launcher

I enjoy reading your articles as well Tony, especially on WW2 fighter armament.

I really like the idea of a stand alone six shot MV grenade launcher.
-The three round version would be way to heavy for an under barrel weapon and probably to long as well.
- MV grenades would give you longer range, but most importantly have a flatter trajectory and give you a larger margin of error on your ranging.
- On a stand alone weapon the extra weight of two barrels might be good in addition to the extra grenades. The stand alone AG36/M320 feels to light, and most times people do better when its mounted on the weapon.

Tony: One thing I thought about. do you think the MK108 could have been used as a vehicle mounted AGL?

In principle I see no reason why not, although the recoil would have been heavy (330g at 505 m/s compared with 240g at 240 m/s for the 40mm HV). It would also have been necessary to develop different ammunition; the 30mm M-Geschoss was developed for anti-aircraft use with delayed action fuzing and the emphasis on blast effect. For effective anti-pesonnel use instant-action fuzing and more fragmentation would have been needed.

from what I understand now a top up is nearly impossible...unless I am misinformed...But don't forget as you shoot it, it get's lighter...

No, it's easy - the ammo used to be in clipped stacks, but they've developed separate-loaded rounds. If you go to their web page on the 3GL (there's a link in my article) you can see it being done on a video.
