LTTE has been asked to surrender - within 48 hrs by SLA, they approximate 600 more rebels are hiding in the forests of Mullativeu - on a side note when the IPKF was on offensive they met with success till they hit the forests of Mullativeu and as per the former commander of IPKF that is when the LTTE's gurreila tactics came out in full utilisation and the IPKF team met with very stiff resistance

yes I saw the picture of the craft in today's Hindu. Interesting to note, LTTE is the only "terrorists" organization in the world to have an Army,nay, Air force and submarines!.

The craft basically looks like a modified boat. I think its designed to be partially or fully submerged with windows on top. Perhaps meant to be used to creep up to Lanka's navy b4 blowing them up.

This homemade submarine now parked in a Costarican port was caught while transporting 3 tons of cocaine by four men including a Sri lankan Tamil who are now indicted in a US court

May be something similar, these guys seem to have been after this for a long time.

Its like the Iranian mighty midget submarines, however for the security context of our region, they are worrying, lot of drug running, gun running, terrorism takes place around here (and most of the time its overlapping).

Some time ago i saw a report about semi-submersible crafts used for smuggling drugs in the American continent (to the US).

These cases are from outside SL, maybe they got some home.

Troops have recovered an LTTE submarine and three suicide boats, considered to be as one of the most startling recoveries ever being made by the troops..

Troops of Task Force Three dominating Udayarkattukulam area in Mullaitivu have recovered them. Three large suicide boats and a haul of LTTE maritime equipment were also found at the location.

Sources revealed that the largest underwater vehicle is about 35 feet in length and armour plated.

Among the other items found were one low bed trailer, one armour plate used for bending machines, 15 welding cylinders and 30 armour plate sheets. The three suicide underwater vehicles were still under construction.

The camp complex was located in the forest and our representatives are still reaching the area.

Army to move in after deadline expires: Lankan foreign secretary
NDTV Correspondent: Saturday, January 31, 2009, (Colombo)

The 48-hour window given to the LTTE by the Sri Lankan government to allow the civilians trapped in the war zone to leave comes to an end on Saturday evening.

Concerned about the humanitarian situation getting worse in the region, Sri Lanka had announced temporary end to the fighting.
Now speaking to NDTV, Sri Lanka's foreign secretary Palitha Kohona has said that the Lankan army would move in after the 48-hr period.

With Civilians out of the way the SLA can do a more careful combing operation prevent civilian casualities and also it can have prolonged operation to flush out the tigers than risk more losses to their side by entering the jungles of Mulativeu

So far they say they have found ghost towns anyway in the last phases of war. The areas SLA has secured are safe for humanitarian work I suppose for the people who have gone far in the North it must be difficult.

Read somewhere it was a suicide submarine so obviously it did not require longtime in water. They might have prepared it for these moments when SL Navy would cross into their waters. Since they were not used I presume your are right about it being a prototype.

Over the course of the protracted conflict with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, the Sri Lanka Navy has been transformed from a constabulary service into a counter-insurgency force.

The area where the Sea Tigers operate is constantly patrolled by what the SLN terms “defence barriers” of vessels four layers deep, consisting of fast attack craft (FAC), offshore patrol vessels (OPVs), gun boats, and the SLN’s Rapid Action Boat Squadron (RABS) and Special Boat Squadron (SBS), eliminating the LTTE’s seaward escape route and preventing supplies from reaching the rebels. Of note is the mounting of infantry support weapons on 14 m and 17 m boats. These include a double-barrelled 23 mm gun, 40 mm AGLs and 12.7 mm (.50 calibre) machine guns to counter the Sea Tigers' swarm tactics.
