Lahad Datu Naval Base

Does anyone know which vessels are based at the naval base in Sandakan, Sabah. And also what their primary functions are?

Thank you.

How much do the scorpenes cost?

Depending on timing...

RM4.5b for 2 subs (>US$1b) - 6 May 2008

RM3.68b for 2 subs (>US$1b) 3 May 2007

RM3.3b for 2 subs - 29 June 2002

How much did the 2 Vastergotlands cost? US$128m

http://www.mima.gov.my/mima/htmls/papers/pdf/mokhzani/mokhzani - singapore-s submarine fleet.pdf

This (unofficial) article although published by a Govt entity mentions the price of the SG vastergotlands.

I think this cites JDW and earlier swedish press reports.

For the Scorpene deal don't forget to factor in the middlemen:) although in the end the RMN did get quite two very capable SSKs to fend off a hypothetical underwater blockade of the Malacca Straits by the PLAN although I suspect they were a tit-for-tat response to the 2 RSN Vastergotlands+ and the supposed 3? IndoN 636 Kilo deal more than anything else. After all, nobody uses subs to deter pirates unless it is a TacTomahawk strike on fixed positions a la Somalia a few weeks ago.

As much as I would like to think the MY high command has psychic powers, it is unlikely the scorpenes could be due to the vastergotlands & kilos cos MY bought the scorpenes in 2002 whilst SG ordered theirs in 2005 and indo ordered the kilos in 2006.
As far back as the two years before the Asian Financial Crisis there had been talk of the RSN acquiring some sort of subsurface capability with the now confirmed Swedish option and rumoured Upholder purchase. Now while Malay Intelligence isn't exactly tier one, OSINT and existing assets within SG would have given them a decent estimatation of what the RSN was looking at for the policymakers to look for a credible alternative.

That being said, I would assume their role to be SIGINT and/or patrol around the Spratlys as that area has quite a large PLAN SSK population as of late.

No need "talk" or "intel". The sub-surface capability you are referring to is called the sjoormen or challenger-class submarines which the RSN acquired in 1995 delivered 1997-2001 and commissioned between 2000-2004.
My apologies, that should have been "significant" sub surface capability-the Challengers were part of the learning curve.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency Buys Two Bombardier 415 Multipurpose Aircraft

(Source: Bombardier Aerospace; issued June 13, 2008)

MONTREAL, QUEBEC --- Today, Bombardier Aerospace announced that the government of Malaysia has placed a firm order for two Bombardier 415 multipurpose amphibious aircraft (Bombardier 415MP) for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). With this order, the Malaysian government becomes the launch customer in Asia for the specialized Bombardier 415MP aircraft.

In addition, the contract includes aircraft integration and training.

A variant of the rugged Bombardier 415 amphibious aircraft, the only aircraft specifically designed for aerial firefighting, the two Bombardier 415MP will be modified with maritime surveillance capabilities to meet the specialized needs of the MMEA. As such, the two Bombardier 415MP aircraft will be equipped with a state-of-the-art surveillance suite that includes two side-looking airborne radars, one forward-looking infrared radar, an airborne maritime surveillance system and other avionics and communications equipment.

"The aircraft's ability to fly at low speed and low altitude with great manoeuvrability and to land on water also makes it an ideal aircraft for coastal patrol missions," said Michel Bourgeois, President, Specialized and Amphibious Aircraft Division, Bombardier Aerospace.

"Our Bombardier 415MP aircraft also offers unique multi-mission capabilities for a wide range of missions as it combines the capabilities of a traditional surveillance aircraft with the added benefit of being able to execute direct interventions on water. It is a very capable and cost-effective aircraft, able to carry out a multitude of specialized missions that previously required dedicated vessels and aircraft," added Mr. Bourgeois.

Since delivery of the first Bombardier 415 aircraft in 1994, Bombardier Aerospace has delivered 67 Bombardier 415 aircraft in Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Ontario, Quebec and Spain, with 42 aircraft in operation in the Mediterranean region alone.

The multi-purpose Bombardier 415MP can be used in a variety of specialized missions such as search and rescue, environmental protection, coastal patrol and transportation. It is fitted with sophisticated sensors to locate and identify vessels, people in distress and pollutants.

A world-leading manufacturer of innovative transportation solutions, from commercial aircraft and business jets to rail transportation equipment, systems and services, Bombardier Inc. is a global corporation headquartered in Canada. Its revenues for the fiscal year ended Jan. 31, 2008, were $17.5 billion US, and its shares are traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange (BBD).

Malaysia selects THV2000s
FLIR Systems (Stand C115) has announced an order from the Malaysian MoD for 12 ThermoVision 2000 (THV2000) long-range thermal imaging sensor systems for a new coastal surveillance network. Selected because of its reliability and excellent range performance, even in smoke and dust environments, the THV2000s are due for delivery shortly. A ‘plug and play’ system, the THV2000 is a cooled thermal imaging system with multi-sensor capabilities, which is compatible with multiple video networking systems. It provides a range of up to 20km and an autofocus option is available to minimise operator fatigue. The company has also received an order for more than 100 units of the Bill Infra-Red Camera (BIRC) clip-on thermal sight from Saab Bofors Dynamics. This provides a night vision capability and makes for quick and easy mounting of the thermal imager on the day sight.

NGV Tech Bids For RM800 Mln Worth Of Contracts

SHAH ALAM, July 2 (Bernama) -- Local shipbuilder NGV Tech Sdn Bhd is bidding for RM800 million worth of contracts both local and overseas, its managing director Ir Jamalolail Mohd Yatim said.

Eighty percent of the contracts are from overseas, with West Asia being the main focus overseas, he told reporters after the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) here Wednesday between NGV Tech and UMW Industrial Power Sdn Bhd. Among the jobs it is vying for include the bid to supply 10 vessels to the Iraqi Navy with each vessel valued at US$6 million.

Jamalolail said the company has also submitted a tender to supply petrol vessels to Oman but declined to give any figures. "We had talks with the parties in Iraq and Oman and hoped to conclude the deals in the next four months," he said.

As for the MoU signed on Wednesday, UMW Industrial will supply 10 units of GE Marine Engines to NGV Tech for RM50 million. The engines are to be used to power four units of 60 metres Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessels to service Saudi Arabia-based Bakri Navigation Co.

The vessels worth about US$16 million per vessel, will be built at NGV Tech's shipyard in Sijangkang, Selangor. The company expects to deliver the first vessel by December this year.

Established in 1992, NGV Tech is a full fledged builder and fabricator of aluminium, steel and composite material crafts and vessels. Every year, it constructs a minimum of 12 vessels and currently its order book stands at RM2.7 billion which is expected to last until 2011.
