South Korea has developed the core technology for radar-evading stealth fighters and is preparing for a test flight of a fighter equipped with the technology, WAM news agency reported Monday.


Quote: The ADD is preparing for a test flight of an F-4 fighter equipped with the technology, according to the official.

I thought conventional stealth technology needs the design and aerodynamics to be changed to avoid radar.

I think this has something to do with Plasma stealth but I could be wrong.

probably just RAM, it shocks me the Koreans are seriously going ahead with this. After looking at their stealth jet model, it still had no internal carriage. That should show how far they got to go.

yeah but South-Koreans always suprise me... Let's just wait and watch

Maybe they just want the F-22 badly enough to spend some serious money posing.

EDIT: By the way what prevents them from just covering their existing fighter fleet in RAM to reduce RCS? They wouldn't be pure stealth, but at least somewhat LO.

I thought South Korea was planing to buy the F-35 as their next generation fighter.

One might question the need for South Korea to buy the F-35 when North Korea still uses mostly Mig-19s and Mig-21s. The most advanced fighter they have are 60 Mig-23s and around 40 Mig-29s. They still use Soviet style SM-2 SAMs deating back to the 1960s.

I'm not saying I'm against South Korea buying the F-35 which I think they should but I thought it is an interesting point to bring up.

Oh it gets better. They have early post WWII AAA by the thousands. For them, the SA-2 is sophisticated tech. Sorry for the derail, but just wanted to note that if the RoK only updated it's military in response to DPRK updates, it would still have a Korean War era military.

I think we can all agree here the only thing stopping South Korea from 'Intervening' North is the possibility of the North's nuclear/CB capability response.

In a conventional battle, the South would win quickly against the DPRK, despite its numbers.

Well there's also the issue of collateral damage. With the amount of Northern artillery pointed southward, they could turn Seoul into ruins without even needing a nuke. Not to mention that the problem with Northern nukes stems from lack of reliable delivery systems. If I was the North I'd use them as nuclear landmines against advancing Southern forces, rather then as conventional nuclear devices (bombs or missile warheads).

Oh snap. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to derail this. Back to the stealth fighter. Is there anything that prevents them from applying RAM to their current 3rd/4th gen fighters to reduce RCS?

Feanor is absolutely correct.

Seoul is powered by natural gas.

Dare we speculate thus; a Southern pre-emptive strike?

Yeah they have ZSU-57s which are WW2 anti-aircraft tanks. They could still be useful though.

I think the S Koreans will ultimately go with advanced EW systems in their F-15Ks similar to what the Israeli's have done and possibly F-35A's when reality and cost are factored in. F-15K/F-35A combo make a compelling case for dealing with N Korea and other likely threats. Hell as is they would slaughter the North from the air IMHO.
