I was hunting around looking up main battle tanks and came across the EE-T1 "Osorio" Main Battle Tank, never knew Brazil produced a main battle tank. It seem the project came close to making a sales to the Saudi's but nothing came of it in the end. Since this slightly lighter then most main battle tanks I wonder of it has future? I assume a new armor package and FCS would be need to be effective for today moderm warfare. I guess breaking into the tank market is a very difficult thing to do with American, British, Russia, Germany and France, controlling the big markets. Does anybody know why Brazil drop out of this type of market? Didn't they sell AFC, APC's to to one or two Middle East countries years back? Is this market in general too flooded and does Brazil's mechanized vehicles have a good rep? Thanks

I'll attached a few links I found

The Osorio 120mm version was offered to Saudi Arabia and recieved high marks in the performance tests, the Saudis were just shy of signing a huge contract when they decided to pull the plug on the deal leaving the company Engesa stunned and Bankrupt, they never really recovered as a company marketing heavy armored vehicles. The Osario carries alot of the same technologies offered in upgraded AMX-30 tanks as far as fire control and a Giat 120mm gun. The chances of this vehicle being resurrected are slim due to it being already outdated in armor protection and mobility.

Engesa sold APCs to numerous countries, mostly in Latin America & the Middle East. Many are still in service. Also made jeeps (I've been in one).

Unfortunately, the cancellation of the Saudi Osorio sale coincided with a loss of other export markets, e.g. Iraq, due to the same cause (the second Gulf war), & a gap in domestic purchases.

Brazil

Thanks guys
Brazil creates a lot of interesting equipment they even produce the own anti-radar missile one of the few countries in the world that do. The armor vehicle industry seems like a difficult market to break into without a couple things going right for you one is home use of the the builders own military.

Never underestimate the importance of political condiserations. Large arms purchases often bring with them a certain amount of weight in political relationships. That explains why the Saudis went with the M1 after Gulf War 1.

South Africa has a problem similar to Brazil's. They produce a range of perfectly good weapon systems but just aren't finding many customers. If you are spending millions on a weapons purchase it might as well get you some political good will from a major world power as part of the deal.

Gulf War 2. :p: There have been three since 1980, & the one you didn't count was by far the longest & bloodiest.

But yes, the Saudis bought M1 partly, at least, for political reasons, as you say, as did Kuwait. Kuwait then bought Warrior IFVs for the same reason.

Right. I guess my US-centric thinking got the best of me.

While I'm thinking of it - what's up with your avatar? The picture is vaguely familiar but I can't place it.

The Cerne Abbas giant - 55 metres tall, carved into a hill in Dorset. Not certain exactly how long he's been there.

Whatever he is - he's pretty excited.

I recall seeing that in a history book somewhere. Celtic or Pictish or something?

Origin and age unknown. Only documented reliably for a few hundred years. No way to date it.

I think discussing hill carvings of male forms with erections could be off topic lol. After you mentioned him being excited, I was wondering what on earth you were on about. The rest of us never looked that closely hehe.

There was another Braslian tank built about the same time period, I think it was lighter though, from another company. I remember being pretty impressed at the time, ah it was the Tamoyo.

I was actually goofing off at work visiting this site and thought "crap! that guy's avatar is going to get me sent to human resources or worse!"

Anyway - there was the Tamoyo and as I recall the Charrua which was an APC using the same chassis.

I guess the new Japanese 44-ton TK-X tank could be a modern equivalent to the Osorio.

Why would a tank that has 1980`s technology compare to a tank that is still being tested with different armor and FCS. Osorio doesn`t even compare to a Type 90.

I'm thinking more for it's weight class and potential missions, use of a lighter tank where a full MBT may be too much. Obviously technology-wise, the new Japanese tank is way ahead.
