Updates to Aster series missiles and other goodies over here...

Well, go to page 38-39 for news on the Asters. Also, it is disclosed here that Singapore`s Formidable frigates are in fact equipped with A50 Slyver launchers and Aster 15 and Aster 30 missiles. And that the Saudis might similarly equip thier frigates with a smilar capability.

There are also other nice articles about other stuffs like the CAEW and Erieye AEW planes.

Great read with excellent & insightful articles.

Pity I can't buy it every month !

This would mean that the Formidable is essentially the FREMM AAW in a slightly smaller body. :)

Close. Assuming that our Herakles MFR is configured for this role.

Sounds exciting really..the recent words by our defence minister about the air defence role of the frigates may allude to this as well.

The Herakles radar is designed to operate and function with both the Aster 15s and Aster 30s. You can check out the specifications and the brochure.

As far as I`ve read, the French FREMM AAW frigates will be using the Herakles radar as well. I cannot say how good this will be relative to the Forbin(with a volumetric search radar) as I have no idea how to compare them qualitatively. Probably less so on its own. But inconsequential when you look at the potential threats facing these ships and the stuffs they are supposed to protect. In addition, the sensors on board the ships will be enhanced when combined with other sensors such as the E-2cs or CAEW AEW aircrafts. So, the ships are rather decent AAWs ships by themselves. And thier capabilities are enhanced when integrated with a comprehensive package of sensors and shooters which is where I would expect them to be; another node in a system of sensors and shooters.

My two cents..

Cheers

Yes. Im excited too.Im looking forward to the next bunch of ships RSN will build. Each time we hear something about them, they would have literally jumped forward in terms of enhancing thier capabilities.

Dear RED,

Many thanks for your information.

With the Aster 15/30, does that means the RSN frigates are equipped with

the PAAMS or our very own indigeniously developed anti air warfare system?

These frigates are truly a class of it's own manz.

I can't help to wait for other developments that the RSN is under taking.

I'm really proud to be a Singaporean and I feels better to know that our

defence spending is well spent on such advanced capabilities.

Cheers!

Best Regards

I would not know.Sorry. I doubt it is PAAMs as it requires Empar or Sampsom. Most probably a version using Herakles. All these radars have good range . They can track hundreds of targets and simultaneously engage multiple targets allowing them to handle saturation attacks from enemy ships and planes. Empar can engage around 12 targets simultaneously. Arable around ten. I clearly remember Herakles can handle ten or more targets simultaneously. So, they already make viable air defence system radars. So, I would venture to say it is more of hooking up the missiles to the radar and the appropriate software. Correct me if im wrong. Perhaps, we can get more information when the French Fremm AAW is ready. Too bad Singapore`s Mindef is less than open on this matter; if not a great deal of many things. They would have thier reasons though.

The aviationweek says, that the FREMM, will be outfitted for the Aster 30 missile. (p34-35) This is strange because they are planning to build FREDAs (AAW FREMM). The range of the Herakles will be increased for the FREDA, and its software will be upgraded. They may want two decaded 300km AAW FFGs supplement the Horizons.

Is`nt the `Freda' basically the same FREMM design with Aster 30 and Aster 15 missiles and Herakles? The land-based attack FREMM is called `AVT' ? It seems popular publications seem to be using the generic `Fremm" rather than `Freda' or 'AVT'. Im curious how you would extend the range of the Herakles from 250km to 300km? Im no engineer. Increased power output? thanks :)

The FREMM has to basic versions the ASW and Land Attack (AVT). The FREDA will use the same hull as the AVT version. The FREDAs are still in the design stage; they want enter service until 2017 or so. Thales will increase the power of the Herakles radar and uprgrade FREDAs software. Thales says, that the Herakles can fire the Aster 30. The ASW version will have 16 A70 launchers and with 16 A43launchers. The AVT version will have the same layout, but it can befitted with 32 A70 launchers.

The Herakles operates both the Aster 15s and Aster 30s. Can check the brochure out. But increasing the range via increasing the power of the Herakles is something new to me. The Freda will be built and launched much earlier if they are entering service around 2017. Thanks. :)

I know the Herakles can operate the two Aster types. But can it fully utilize ther ange of the Aster 30?

The Aster 30`s current maximum range is 100 km no? The Herakles stated range is 250 km. How far can the Aster 30 s possibly go? If you`re talking about Aster 45s or an ABM Aster missiles, then Im not so sure what the ranges of these missiles will be?

Some forum members say that the Herakles, can't properly utilize the Aster 30s range without the S1850M. I think they are wrong, but I want to be fair.
The MN is not mentioning the Aster 30 capability of the Herakles. The 3 French military branches are fighting for funds.

Thanks, but is the Aster 30 Block 2 same as former (or speculated) Aster 45?
The Aster 30 Block 2 is a short to medium range ABM.

Oh no, the S1850 is a long range search radar. It is not a targetting radar unlike the Herakles or Arable or Empar. It is a plus if you have something like the S1850 or SMART-L radar where your detection range is boosted to 400 kilometres. But you`ll still need a multi-function radar like the Herakles for targetting and such. These multi-function radars already have long detection and tracking ranges of >250 km. Hence, the Herakles would be more than capable to exploit the abilites of the Aster missiles. Having something like S1850 supplements the range of these multi-function radars and would be most suitable for a full fledged AAW destoyer like the Type 45 where they can also be configured for ABM duties.

Hence, the ' Freda' would be able to benefit from the Forbin`s longer detection range if they are sailing together.
