Interesting in this context (but unrelated to any arctic claims) is that the German Chancellor is currently visiting Greenland, and will later attain a conference on Global Warming hosted on Spitzbergen.

The area is definitely getting interesting, politically.

It's a "hot" topic... :D

Going to Greenland with the Danish PM or ministers is becoming a must for climate aware politicians. Many a US member of Congress and Euro politicians have made that trip the past year.

ever4244 - Thanks for detailed answer.
Concerning Arctic I think point is - who will start exploration first and who will show economical activity in region. In USSR time arctic sea actively used as transport way for cargo transportation from Europe to Russian far east. Recently this way is almost forgotten - looks like railways chipper.
No one currently have technology to explore any resources in conditions of polar arctic ocean . Even in present time - there is no sufficient enough technology to drill on depth more than 1000 m even in mild climate. Depth in far arctic sea beyond 200 mile zone are way deeper.
I heard about some ideas of fully submersible drilling platforms - but not sure how long it will take to deploy such expansive project.

Well, in 20-30 years time the Arcitic should open up for commercial traffic Europe-Asia in the summer season. It is also the same perspective for commercial exploitation of resources. But oil rigs are creeping further and futher north and out to greater depths as each year passes.
