It's difficult to go past Operation Overlord, the greatest amphibious assault in history, though, if naval operations are included, I have always been fascinated by the Battle of Midway.

Cheers

I wish we could conduct a similar operation for Iran, but on a more larger scale.

Put a few additional submarines in the Persion Gulf and you could with minimal casualties.
That's also another option, but I prefer to use air power against specific nuclear facilities within the country. If you use an element of stealth, and rapid motion of various aircraft over the targets in Iran.

Operation Market-Garden. Always liked the name because it doesn't make any sense...both name wise and well historically...

I noticed many of the military operations mentioned here were fairly small and insignificant. How about something huge, surely the biggest allied operation in WWII: Operation Bagration?

It is not only the success that was impressive, but the whole buildup, the very careful use of Maskirovka, and finally the execution. Just the coordination of such a huge front involving so many forces was nothing short of brilliance: in my opinion a true masterpiece in the art of war.

THat was a good one.

How about the biggest of them all; Barbarossa? 3.5 million men jumping off into enemy territory within a week of each other, what tops that?

At the time, in the Phillipean Islands, Gen. MacArthur marveled at the ability to supply an operation of that scale. Little did he know...

General von Paulus (later of Stalingrad fame) knew that his team was in trouble, and proposed a pause in August to allow the logistic situation to be rectified. Unfortunatly for the Germans, he was ignored.

You would think that a man who had an experiance like that would have done the right thing, and pulled out of Stalingrad the moment he saw what was happening.

Not when a man like him decides than good old prussian tradition of deciding what your leader wants is better than doing what you think should be done.

Well, my fav. operation has to be operation Vijay.
For those of you who dont know what operation vijay is, i will give u a summary.

Amidst some of the world's highest peaks and the most inhospitable terrain were some regular armymen using the terrain to ambush. The terrain was such that the movement of heavy infantry was ruled out.The offencive had to be carried out only by light infantry supportes by artellary.

Imagine pushing out intruders who are sitting at the hill tops and having a better view and angle of fire than you are.
But the indian army still managed to push back the intruders.

It was extensively covered by the indian media, and every time i saw pictures from that war, i felt more proud of being Indian!!!!!!!

... actually, India had two operations by that name. You mean the second one in 1999 in the Kargil War against Pakistan. The original Operation Vijay was the war against Portugal and capture of Portuguese posessions in and near India in 1961.

Question..

I had a question.. What is the most scandalous, spy-using, almost as fiction/movie like operation/military strategies that has been suscessfully acted upon to? I'm sorry for this question, may sounds bit silly, I don't know how else to put into a question and if anyone could spare time to tell me some great stories that I have don't have much knowledge of, that would be great.
Thanks!
