According to Wikipedia, the 131 m long and 9000 tonnes (full load) heavy HMNZS Canterbury (L421) multi-role vessel (MRV)/strategic sealift ship costs NZ$130 million.
Do you have sources for the efficiency claim?
Because to me, that doesn't sound right. In an electric engine-system you have an extra conversion of energy (mechanical->electrical->mechanical energy) that should end up with a less efficient machine.
You are keeping your Gas Turbines constantly spinning at their most economical 'cruise' speed though. Which makes up the difference. If you need more power, light off another turbine. For a pure Gas turbine setup you may need one turbine going per shaft continuously at an inefficiently low speed for cruising, whereas for an electric system you have one turbine providing power to both shafts.
