War Against ISIS

Iraq has announced that it has retaken most of Fallujah. No doubt it will be a morale boost for Iraqi troops and a blow for IS but it's really too early to early to be celebrating. IS still holds lots of territory and as long as there are deep divisions within the country's Shia and Sunni community; IS will continue to attract volunteers and support; irrespective of how much ground it loses and how much firepower is hurled at it. IS has benefited from the fact that its enemies are divided and are driven by self interests. Over in Syria; whether one likes it or not; it's Assad, supported by Russia and Iran which is doing the most to hold back IS; yet some in the U.S. are pushing for military action to be taken against Assad. If this happens the IS leadership will be all smiles.

I follow this thread regulary. One thing I was wondering about is the use of black uniforms and paint on the cars and armor used. Why is this? It does not seem a logical colour if you look at the landscape.
To clearly establish their 'brand'. It doesn't make sense from a tactical point of view, but perhaps they see it 'strategically' as the point of difference.

'This is who we are, we are not afraid and do not lurk in the shadows' type of thing?

Will the ISF focus on consolidating their control over all of Al Anbar, Salah a Din, At Tamin (Kirkuk) province, and Nineva (minus Mosul), or will the ISF focus on taking Mosul?

Is Tal Afar firmly under ISF control? Are all the supply routes between Mosul and Syria now controlled by the ISF?

It's been a while. Update time.

The SAA continues the push towards Tabka. Russian forces are part of the spearhead. There was a particularly mess incident recently where the SAA gained 12 kms and then lost 10kms in ~1 day, putting Syrian arty on the front line. A Russian correspondent reports that BM-21s were used as direct fire. Multiple suicide bomber trucks were used to attack the SAA checkpoints around that area, and in one attack a Russian soldier was killed (video in one of the links). The report goes that he managed to stop one of the suicide trucks from hitting the position, but was caught in the blast. This brings Russia war dead in Syria to 11.

Meanwhile around Aleppo, the SAA is continuing to lose ground to a rebel offensive. Slowly but surely al-Nusra and allies are regaining ground lost in an earlier offensive to a combined Iranian-Hezbollah push.

After 15 days, The IS forces regime forces to pull back from al-Raqqa province | Syrian Observatory For Human Rights

According to this report the regime forces are pushed back away from Tabka and will not be capturing it any time soon at this rate.

It seems to me that the IS leadership realised that Raqqa isn't under immediate threat so they can redeploy defences elsewhere.

So this gambit isn't paying off and these forces would be better used in the Palmyra-Deir Ezzor campaign. Meh.
ISIS just delivered a crushing counter-attack into the flank of the SAA forces stretched out along the highway. Mass use of suicide bombers, casualties well into the triple digits, possibly more. I'll try to post another update tomorrow.

Wow it's still not over, they are being pushed back to the Ithriya crossroads. This doesn't look like just a strategic retreat, since they are being pursued, there are clashes from what I understand.

In any case, this has been a clear rout, I hope it stops at those crossroads, they look extremely important, strategically, I don't think the regime affords to lose that point.

Also, it's interesting what's happening in Al-Rai near the turkish border. It has changed hands a few times, things must be hairy there. It is some rebels ("FSA", remember that acronym? lol) versus ISIS.

Now that the Iraqis have liberated Fallujah, Daesh will surely be reeling from the loss of income through taxes, fines, extortion etc., and the loss of war material in Fallujah and its surrounds. Most of all will be the damage done to its image, which will surely impact upon its recruitment. The next target on the list will be Mosul and having successfully taken Fallujah, the Iraqi army and more importantly, its soldiers, know that they can take on Daesh and win - Daesh are beatable on the battlefield.

One can only hope. Unfortunately it will most probably take more than a significant loss of territory for IS to start losing mass support or to reach a stage where cash is an issue. My take is that as long as its enemies remain divided [especially over Syria] and as long as some longstanding issues are not addressed [such as the deep rooted distrust that exists amongst Iraqi Sunnis and Shias]; IS will continue to receive mass support [from people who share its ideology and from people who might not share its ideology but nonetheless support IS due to several factors]; irrespective of how much territory IS loses and how much firepower is hurled at it. Also, for the IS leadership; the loss of Fallujah is just a minor setback in a very long war against its enemies; a war that IS is prepared to fight for decades or more to achieve its aims. Like the Talibs in Afghanistan, IS is in no hurry.

US airstrikes kill at least 250 ISIS fighters in convoy outside Fallujah, official says
A series of American airstrikes killed at least 250 ISIS fighters driving in a convoy outside Fallujah on Wednesday, a senior U.S. defense official confirmed to Fox News.

The strikes occurred on the outskirts of the Iraqi city in "southern Fallujah," a second U.S. defense official told Fox News.

"There was a strike on a convoy of ISIS fighters trying to leave a neighborhood on the outskirts of southern Fallujah that we struck," the official said.

At least 40 vehicles were destroyed in the airstrikes, a U.S. official told Reuters, which was first to report the air assault.

The RAF have used Storm Shadow for the first time against Daesh. Apparently Daesh were utilising a pre 2003 Saddam Hussein era reinforced bunker in western Iraq until the RAF visited it with four Storm Shadow missiles. It is now, similar to the Norwegian Blue, an ex bunker.

After their defeats in the Latakia mountains the SAA is sending some frontline troops to reverse the tide. The goal is apparently to really seal the border with Turkey this time. For good.

Some months ago I said that the SAA takes 2 steps forward and 1 step back. Nowadays they seem to make 1 forward and 1 backwards. I call them the Sysiphean Arab Army.

Great opportunity for the VMF to continue using Syria as a training and proving ground. Why not test out the capabilities of the Kuznetsov

The Royal Malaysian Police have confirmed that a grenade attack on a bar last week was IS's first successful attack on Malaysian soil. Although about 8 were injured, fortunately no lives were lost. The same can't be said of the attack in Baghdad in which more than 200 were killed; as well as the attack on the bakery in Dhaka in which hostages were hacked and the ones in Saudi. Unfortunately, despite all it's facing in Syria and Iraq; IS still manages to attract people to its ideology from across the globe.

On another note there's an interesting photo here of an abandoned IS tank [T-54/55 or T-72?] fitted with ''chicken wire'' as protection against shoulder fired weapons. As the tank had previously belonged to the Syrian army, it's interesting to speculate as to who fitted the ''chicken wire''; the Syrians or the tank's new owners?

hello everyone thus is my first message on defence talk........

signature train and equip failure? hmmm....here is a link to sputnik....

jeez can't post a link to sputnk....I'm a newby. anyway here is an excerpt....

Fighters from the Manbij Military Council and the Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) have surrounded Daesh (ISIL/ISIS) terrorists in Manbij, a strategically important city located 65km southwest of Kobane in northern Syria.
In an effort to tip the balance in the fierce fight to free the city from Daesh, SDF forces in Manbij have called in reinforcements from Kobane, Hasakah and Qamishli, in north-eastern Syria.

In the past 35 days, the operation has forced Daesh terrorists to flee 200 of the towns and villages surrounding Manbij.

On Monday the US-led anti-Daesh coalition carried out eight airstrikes against the terrorists, aimed at destroying their infrastructure and weapons, including cars laden with explosives.

However, the presence of civilians in Manbij has complicated the task of carrying out airstrikes on Daesh positions in the city.

Manbij, 84km from Aleppo, has a population of 80,000.

It was first captured by Free Syrian Army forces in 2012, before coming under the control of Daesh in 2014.

US-Trained Fighters Participate in Operation to Liberate Manbij From Daesh
Manbij Military Council commander Serdar Heci told Sputnik that Daesh is putting up a fierce fight to keep the city, but that his forces are winning the battle.
"Daesh militants have been carrying out attacks for several days with the aim of breaking the siege of the city," Heci said.

"Yesterday (Monday) jihadists attempted an attack on three fronts, on the villages of Dadat and Gerbete, (but) our forces put up strong resistance."

"More than 100 militants were killed and two tanks were destroyed by the coalition forces. As a result, our forces were able to regain control of several settlements which had previously been under terrorist control," Heci said.

"Daesh is constantly trying to attack, but all these attempts are unsuccessful thanks to the coordinated actions of our forces."..

quite a change from the usual Russian agitprop isn't it? one wonders if Putin is seeking a new friendship as asserted by his July 4th message to Obama.....?

I insist that the failures of the USA train & equip programs are many and very serious. They have contributed to the chaos in the region.

Just because they finally got the clue that the FSA effort is not working and started working with the kurds instead, doesn't undo all their failures. Don't make me search for some article about the whole brigade that surrendered their equipment instantly for free passage :D

Now that they finally ignored Erdogan and invested on the kurds, they are having success against ISIS. Everyone else could see that the only reliable anti-ISIS forces were the SAA and the kurds, except the USA. So much time and effort wasted while ISIS consolidated and "moderate" groups joined or coexist with the salafists.

there's also the sunni iraqi special forces and the retaking of ramada as well as kurds at kobane.....

you can obsess with US failure but really they have been fighting with one arm tied behind their back and minus a leg as well. it's the way Obama wants to fight. he's a liberal constitutional lawyer who happens to be in charge of US military forces, and that is reflected in strategy and tactics. he also left the Iraq military w/o motivated leadership due to an Iranian stooge government who thought the shia militias would save them. I think he knows better now. at least he should. one never really knows about these things.
