F-16s not to Fly at Aero India 2005
The U.S. F-16 fighters will not participate in the flying display of Aero India 2005, authoritative sources told aeroindianews.com.“As of now there are no plans whatsoever to display the F16 at Aero Indiaâ€, the source said adding that other aircraft of Lockheed Martin such as the PC3 Orion and the C130 Hercules will be on display and may take part in the flying demonstrations.
The F-16 is pitted against the Russian MiG-29 MRCA, the latest version of the MiG-29, the SAAB Grippen and the Mirage-2000 for a share of the estimated $9 billion order to buy 126 fighter planes for the Indian Air Force (IAF). The Indian MoD is reported to have issued a request for information (RFI) to the U.S. government to provide information for the bid.
“There have been some reports that the F-16s will be among the flying displays at Aero India but the U.S. government or Lockheed Martin knows nothing about itâ€, the source said.
The presence of the F-16s was expected to add considerable excitement at AI 05 as it would match its skills with its two arch-rivals in the fighter aircraft business – the Sukhoi 30 and the MiG-29.
Interestingly, the F-16 has not lost a single competition for fighter aircraft contracts but it remains to be seen how it fares in India, if at all the U.S. government allows Lockheed Martin to bid for the project.
