Wonder if that could means a modified version of the National Security Cutter, which was put forward to the RAN I believe via Ingalls

Oh and not sure of the 4000-5000 ton in blue is supposed to go to a link but my iPhone wants to use it as a number to ring.
There shouldn't be an iPhone link, no idea how that happened unless it is due to hyphenating the displacement range.. Perhaps it is a gremlin wishing the frigate should be at least 6000 tons.:)

Two big factors in the sustainment side of the equation, besides the obvious too few ships, is this, in particular the aircraft readiness, is precisely what was predicted when the Tea Party forced sequestration on the government several years ago, and of course the flow on effects of Rumsfelds corporatisation of many of the defence departments support, sustainment and engineering functions.

Fingers crossed the fact the House Republicans now have a Republican president so with turn the funding back on. Also, following a number of serious safety, certification, quality and fraud issues, NAVSEA SUPSHIPS seems to have been revitalised to go back and do what they used to do. Both will take time to have an effect, though SUPSHIPS has been rebuilding capability for several years now.

14 carriers? Hmm..,.aspirational :)

I also suspect that cancelling LCS and starting over again would look pretty expensive.

Even 12 nuke carriers along with some aviation enhanced America Class ships is aspirational. The re-designed LCS (friggitized LCS) is going to happen and is confirmation the LCS concept is a failure. It will be a costly correction.

USCG, not USN, but still of some relevance

FRC Bailey Barco Delivered To The USCG
22 delivered in roughly 70 months, since receiving the first in April 2011.

My rough math, if same rate is held through entire planned 58 ship procurement, suggests that the last ship should be delivered around late summer of 2023.

Of course, that's dependant on Bollinger's yard not suffering any major hurricane damage from now until then.

You might want to drag up one of SecNav Mabus outgoing speeches which includes a defence of LCS

there's a much broader picture on the value of what they can bring to not only the fight, but broader force impacts.

its worth listening to

Well "if" Trump and Putin camps are colluding I suppose we can expect some scripted sabre rattling to refute the recent reports of extensive contacts between them, followed by a de-escalation for the sake of peace, happiness and kumbaya, leading to the softening of sanctions' and new season of detente. That was tongue in cheek but with the recent carry on I wouldn't be surprised if surveillance tapes are leaked hinting at feigned aggression in the event of too much attention being paid to collusion. Now where did I put my tin foil hat?

This has major implications in how the USN will operate manned/unmanned assets. The oceans are vast and deep and knowing the precise location of one's assets at any point in time is a major advantage.

DARPA Discovers "GPS-Like" undersea drone connectivity

The Pentagon’s research entity and BAE Systems are working together to develop a next-generation undersea drone communications technology to help identify mines, find enemy submarines and surveil many items relevant to combat missions.

Using underwater acoustic signals, a surface buoy, beacon or “node,” and GPS signals in a coordinated fashion, the Positioning System for Deep Ocean Navigation (POSYDON) is able to quickly relay location coordinates from undersea drones on patrol to command and control systems on board a ship or submarine.

The program, now in a Phase I developmental effort, is a collaborative enterprise between industry and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

POSYDON provides “omnipresent, robust positioning across ocean basins. By ranging to a small number of long-range acoustic sources, an undersea platform would be able to obtain continuous, accurate positioning without surfacing for a GPS fix,” DARPA developers explained.

Great story and actually surprisingly common. The mother of a family friend was the Architectural Draftswoman in Victoria for years. She was a trained architect from Eastern Europe, who emigrated to Australia post WWII only to discover that women where not only not trained in architecture, but specifically excluded from being registered and working as such.

Being one of the most qualified and experienced people in the field in the entire country the Victorian State government were determined to find a way to use her skills. Solution, by act of parliament they created the position of Architectural Drafts Woman so the could employ her to do the work needed as a one off case, then they employed a junior male architect to sign off her work so they could use her designs.
