What is the idea behind having Gun(Advanced Gun System) which can fire at the range of 100miles?

It is a legacy of a USMC requirement for the navy to be able to provide fire support. This was a role that battleships and cruisers used to fulfill. The reason why the Battleships took so long to retire, was that no other vessels could provide the same standoff distance and the same weight of fire.

Can we provide Fire Support for Marines through Short range missiles?
And The number of amphibious Assault operations by US marines from ww2 is very less.
I think one has been made during 1991 gulf war.
Can this Advanced Gun system be used against ships?

The gun munition is looking like a LASER guided bomb :

It can fire 155mm shells at a sustained rate of 12 rounds/min.
The Firing,Loading , ammo management etc is fully automated.
Its is being said that the munition has terminal seeker.
But the actual guidance method is not known.
