US Army News and updates general discussion

I'm scratching my head on this one. Have they developed some micro Inertial Navigation Unit that can withstand G forces that accompany being fired from a cannon? Is the intent to just ensure a hit close to the programmed GPS coordinates or will it have the ability to be reprogrammed flight via data ;link?

Army awards precision guidance contract -- Defense Systems

BAE Systems' U.S. subsidiary has received an $8 million contract to develop guidance kits that help munitions change course in-flight without the use of GPS navigation.

The US military is developing "positioning navigation and timing technologies" (PNT) as a substitute for GPS. This link discusses PNT.

Not necessarily. Proliferation means just about anyone with enough money and connections can get their hands on something that can put a serious dent in an Abrams... or a Merkava.

Agreed.
Any armoured vehicle without active protection systems these days is just a target.
It has taken the US quite a while to take seriously something that the Israelis take for granted.
Even the Russians have made this a priority

Another article discussing the vulnerabilities of GPS, the notes at the end have a couple possible emerging technologies. The quantum computing solution is a ways off I think and is applicable for other military applications. Hopefully its timeline is shorter than the other most promising technology, nuclear fusion.:)

Quantum computing is an easier problem at the moment compared to nuclear fusion. Fusion involves extremely high pressures and temperatures to work and the only way it can be achieved by humans at the moment is the thermonuclear weapon. Quantum computing is in partial use with unconfirmed reports that it is being used to encipher some messages.

Yes, the Chinese have made several claims about quantum technology including quantum radar. Given the nature of their government and commitment to producing engineers and scientists instead of lawyers, it is not hard to believe China is ahead in this area. Having a big pile of cash kind of helps as well.

Slight correction here. There are a handful of nuclear fusion reactor test sites which have managed to achieve laser-induced fusion. At present though the amount of energy required to initiate a fusion reaction and contain it exceeds the amount of energy which can be captured from the reaction.

The Skunk Works is projecting a working prototype in 5 years. They built their reputation on innovative and rapid prototyping so my fingers are crossed wishing them success.

I am not going to be holding my breath. JET (Joint European Torus) and a few others in Europe and the US were able to achieve fusion in 1992 when it first came to my attention. Since then there have been improvements, but still nothing that would permit a self-sustaining fusion reactor, never mind an exploitable reactor.

FYI, there is a thread in Space Technology, "Compact Fusion Reactors", which has been dormant for 2 years or so. Haven't seen anything new regarding LM's CFR, probably not a positive sign of progress.

There is a guy on YouTube who goes by the name Garth Stewart who claims to have taken part in the invasion of Iraq in 2003 who has been running his mouth about the Green Berets in Niger who were killed claiming they were cowards and run away getting shot down like cowardly dogs.

I found it pretty disgusting because it is obvious from the available video the four guys that were cut off from ground and air support fought for hours before they were finally overwhelmed they had no choice they were down to 2 men and it was either stand where they were and die, surrender and die or run and try to link up with other members of their unit which they tried to do but were shot down.

Does anyone know if this muppet is for real it really surprised me that a veteran would come out talking that way.

Is it this guy?

If so, it certainly seems out of character from what I've been able to find out about him. Though, all I could find was seriously old. And, I wasn't able to find anything related to his name on youtube within the last year.

Yep that is him check out this link go through it and see what he has been saying if you type in a search on you tube he is on all the videos for the Green Beret ambush calling them cowards and saying they got shot down like cowardly dogs running away and saying the Niger forces fought harder.

Quote "Niger elements fought harder and took more casualties than the running cowards who died on their knees begging for their lives."

The comments section doesn't seem to come with this link but if you go on youtube you will find this video and others and the comments section with it.

Really surprised me to see that kind of disrespect from another veteran.

Using his name and images on a youtube account doesn't necessarily make it him. Could easily be anyone

Yeah it could be someone else he also named a couple of guys he was with in Iraq with and called them cowards as well so it's poor form if the person isn't really him but if it is him it is even worse.

Either way those Green Berets weren't cowards regardless of what anyone says.

US Army decides to rapidly move forward with Armed Robotic Ground Combat Vehicle (ARGCv) with first prototypes by 2019 and ground testing in 2020.

The advantages are obvious From a manned wingman, armed Scout, screening, MOUT etc. all in a smaller less expensive and expendable platform

Army Wants Armed Ground Robot Prototype by 2019
