Hi All,
I'm very interested in getting more details about this, as I'd like to set up a small business in South Africa to conduct anti-poaching patrols (amongst other things which would make this a viable business).
Arcturus, I can't seem to send you a private message. I've left my contact email on my profile, so please feel free to get in touch!
I've given this idea a lot of thought, and it seems to be there's a gap in the market for this sort of thing - UAV's will be easier and far more cost effective to deploy than helicopters, and there is less risk of someone being shot at by poachers, which is the current risk for people using microlights to fly around the bush.
What is clear, is that to be effective, the camera has to be stable on the platform even on windy days, and the UAV will need to fly close enough above the trees, to effectively be able to spot people, and animals. Thermal imaging is a must as poachers will no doubt be easier to spot using this method at night. GPS is also needed so, when the poachers are spotted, the GPS will identify their exact location to send patrols in after them. So really, cheap and cheerful options probably aren't going to be much use, and in some ways, the expesive UAVs out there will probably be prohibitively expensive, meaning not everyone will be able to afford them, meaning a business can be established with operators acting as consultants to various game farms.
I'd be grateful for anyone to contact me with advice or suggestions!
