I'm formally announcing not only the most advanced radar in the world but also a complete shift in all known physics.

According to this press release here and the video inside it:
VIDEO: UK Navy Starts Outfitting Its Warships with ARTISAN 3D Radar >> Naval Today

The artisan radar can detect objects the size of a tennis ball travelling at THREE TIMES THE SPEED OF LIGHT!!!

Grab your check books fellas and start buying shares.
No need to get sniffy because your feeble radar sets all work within the limitations of relativistic physics :)

I've just finished watching "The Iron Lady" on cable (I'm sure many broadcasters around the world will be programming it) and oh for a current politician who had the conviction and guts that this lady had. Love her or hate her, she was driven by her values and not by her popularity
Britain has lost her Lady and the world is a different place without her.
Vale Margaret Thatcher.

Unsurprisingly there's news out today of parties (some turning into riots) celebrating her death, expect people throwing bricks or whatever at her coffin when it's taken through the streets . . .

Anyway, in preparation for Exercise Joint Warrior this year, Portsmouth based assets deployed are
  • HMS Illustrious
  • HMS Diamond (T45)
  • HMS Richmond (T23)
  • HMS Westminster (T23)
  • HMS Hurworth (Hunt MCMV)
  • HMS Brocklesby (Hunt MCMV)

Plymouth based assets deployed are

  • HMS Bulwark
  • HMS Montrose (T23)
  • HMS Sutherland (T23)
  • HMS Echo (Survey ship)
  • HMS Talent (T-class SSN)
  • RM from 42 Commando
  • RM from 30 Commando
  • RM from 3 Commando HQ
  • RM from 29 Commando RA

Quite a sizable deployment, curious that there's no Bays or RoRo's mentioned considering Bulwark will presumably be doing her thing. But it's a decent force nonetheless, throw in a Bay or 2 + the RoRo's and you've got a pretty good task force right there, if landing equipment ashore was the task.

In other news, Janes reports that the LMM will begin production in the half of 2014

I have done Joint Warrior several years ago, it was interesting.

On another note I saw that two of the ships I was stationed on are taking part this year as well. :D

Cold too i'd bet ;)

Yeah, it'd be perfect if there was a single resource where it listed all the units involved in Joint Warrior, I found a list from another forum about the air component which looks rather impressive. All I could find are little bits here and there, care to share which ships? :D

Although IIRC I think I know one of them from a comment you made on another thread

EDIT: Actually, reading through this list carefully all the relevant ships with embarked helicopters are given, so it's rather interesting.

It is indeed, considering that's just a smidge under a third of our frigate force deployed for an exercise (and a substantial chunk of our MCM capability), makes you wonder what would happen if British interests were threatened overseas, we might not be as impotent as the critics suggest

Cheers for the info AegisFC! Exactly what I was looking for, glad to see a Bay + Fort Austin there, I expect the latter would be high in demand.

That's a heck of a list from the RN right there. Should be a cracking exercise for all concerned I'm sure.

Bloody hell, the RN are going to be busy for the next few months

Royal Navy Leads Task Group In Largest NATO Exercise In Europe | Royal Navy

...

Once Joint Warrior is concluded, the Response Force Task Group staff will pore over the lessons and introduce them in time for the summer when the force deploys on Exercise Cougar 13, once again to the Mediterranean and beyond, with elements including counter-piracy operations and wider maritime security duties.
Bet the media (again) will report it as a task force in case North Korea kicks off or something, that's the general thing that happens.

This'll be the real test, lets compare the number of escorts for Cougar 13 to Joint Warrier. Last year it was just 2 frigates with no AWD, my bet would be one of each. Hopefully it gets RFA logistical support too, that deployment just highlighted the RN's weaknesses.

EDIT: 8th and last Type 23 upgraded with Thales 2087 sonar

This is getting silly now, before Astute's ISD was "Spring 2013", now it's "by the end of the year". But there's good news about Ambush

https://navynews.co.uk/archive/news/item/7435

Both of Britain’s next-generation hunter-killer submarines will deploy on front-line operations within the next 12 months.

After years of trials and tests HMS Astute will be ready for action before the end of the year, followed by her sister Ambush early in 2014, says the Navy’s second most senior officer, Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Philip Jones

BOTH of Britain’s next-generation hunter-killer submarines will deploy on front-line operations within the next 12 months.

After years of trials and tests HMS Astute will be ready for action before the end of the year, followed by her sister Ambush early in 2014.

So says the Navy’s number two, Vice Admiral Philip Jones, who as Fleet Commander is a man “expected to have a minute-by-minute handle on the deployed Fleet, 24 hours a day, seven days a week”.

After four months at the helm of the Fleet, the Admiral says that two of the key issues facing the Royal Navy in the coming years are to get the Astute boats into service, followed by the Queen Elizabeth class carriers.

...
Good news about Amubush like I said, the sooner these boats are operational the better.

From the info i've got right now, our SSN force is currently down to 5 boats with one in maintenance (Torbay, due to be out this summer), Tireless is being repaired because of a reactor leak but is the next sub to leave service.

So within the next 12 months our submarine force will be

  • HMS Ambush
  • HMS Astute
  • HMS Torbay
  • HMS Talent
  • HMS Trenchant
  • HMS Triumph

Our projected force with the Astutes (7) will be more powerful than the force we've been using for the last few years which has generally been dipping around 5/6 for a while now.

HMS Dragon Dragon readies for counter-piracy mission in Crete

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/dragon-readies-for-counter-piracy-mission-in-crete

A multi million pounds ship in this kind of mission is a non sense in my opinion, the same is to send an rfa for the caribbean patrol but with the shortage of ships there is no alternative, I hope that in the next "defence review" the number of escorts has no further reductions but with these politicians it would be no rare.
If politicians reduce the armed forces the commitments have to be reduced in the the same proportion but for the burocrats is very usual to use the forces like propaganda.

HMS Ark Royal to leave Portsmouth for scrapyard - Local - Portsmouth News

A very valuable ship, my tribute to her.

Very sad days , thanks to the irresponsible politicians authors of this very big mistake, only salami slicing whithout thinking about the british and western segurity. Not to mention the demise of 72 harriers, sincerely I think these people they have not interest about defence only balance budget even putting the UK at risk.
