The best weapon for after the apocalypse

Post-apocalypse means the need to hunt for food and self defense.

But what would the post-apocalyptic earth be?

Would there still be large grazing animals? Or would it be mostly the smaller animals that live in burrows etc that have a better chance for survival.

Unfortunately, the M16 would not be a good choice as you may run out of rifle cleaning materials. And the M16 does need cleaning.

Wow, just took another look at my last post in this thread. I am surprised at how coherent that is, given my state of mind (lights on, no one home...) at the time.

In terms of the what/where it occurs, IMO it would not really make much of a difference, assuming it was some truly large-scale event. The only possible exception is if one is part of a self-sustaining community. People in such situations would likely feel less of a negative impact from outside events. However, given the likelihood of disruptions to local, national and transnational security apparatus, such communities could become targets of those desparate or covetous for the communities' resources.

My personal preference is a knife and walking stick. They are both useful in a number of different ways and do not present themselves as obvious weapons. In point of fact I have been meaning to start practicing with an old fashioned sling as well, since stones are always readily available and it would provide a portable ranged weapon and hunting tool.

A modern slingshot with some replacement rubbers should be wondefull to have.

Just recently I had the chance to play with one. With some muscles these babys throw a stone or lead/iron/steel ball with immense power. Defenitely enough to hurt somebody bad and kill small animals like rabits and birds.

Well if it's nuclear, we have to deal with climate change, and radiation, and destruction of large urban centers, but considerable numbers of survivors. If it's zombies, then we have major cities intact, but potentially less survivors. If it's some sort of natural catastrophe, then depending on the extent and exact nature those variables would change. Our location would also factor into that. It's one thing to find out about a global apocalypse, while living in the safe isolation of Nome Alaska, it's another thing if you're in New York city. (and another thing entirely if you have the misfortune of living in Moscow )

Your last two ideas are a bit too far fetched. How do you expect to build a space travel system after the apocalypse when there is absolutely no basic infrastructure. hell even we cant build such systems now and possibly wont be able to for the next 50 years. And how do you plan to have so much electricity when all the power stations are going to go poof!

There are some downsides to a sword-cane though. Unless the person bearing it has some sort of odd gait which would normally suggest a walking cane, anyone would be suspect. Unless of course they had the top hat, black tie, gloves and tails which would be the normal "fancy" garb to which a dress cane would be appropriate. And frankly, if I came across anyone strolling about after a major, world changing catastrophe in a top hat and tails, I would automatically be giving them a wide berth since they would be a balmy nutter. At best.

One could have one made, I suppose. However doing so would likely cause one to give up many of the properties that make up a good walking stick. Which incidentally are nearly identical to what defines a good bo/quarterstaff.

The other downside is the type of blade which could realistically be fitted into a sword-cane. As a rule they are small/fine blades, akin to those found in fencing and dress swords. In other works, they are generally piercing or thrusting weapons, as opposed to the slashing/cutting weapons most think of when people say the word, "sword."

This carries over into the design of the blade itself. The blades are generally narrow, with the ones I have seen only being about the width of a dagger at the widest (~1" / 3 cm), which can lend the blade to being broken or shattered if it gets caught between something or hit from the side with something hard. One of the other issues is that the tang of a sword should be usually be balanced to equal the weight of the blade. Given that most sword-canes do not have the normal sort of crosspiece or handguard found on regular swords, it can be difficult to have a properly balanced blade and tang, which can then make wielding it awkward.

I'd wear a pair of jeans, combat boots, t-shirt, and some sort of jacket.
