Yes, Garibaldi (operational since 1987) will remain until at least 2015, most likely 2020. Its replacement will be a ship comparable to the Spanish BPE LPH/carrier, approx 25,000 tonnes.
Let's not forget the Cavour replaces the CGH Vittorio Veneto (soon to be a museum ship in Genova) not the Garibaldi.

Ciao, mi fa piacere vedere infine un altro italiano...

The F35B VSTOL will be operational around 2012 and its procurement is planned for 22 aircrafts 2012-2020.

Regarding the most recent pics of Conte di Cavour carrier, I have put what I have in the "Gallery" section. I do have a google-earth picture from May 2006, but it isn't of the highest quality...
I visited Muggiano 3 weeks ago. The ship's superstructure is now complete, though there are still some finishing touches on the 2nd mast (long range air search radar). There are still a lot of workers on the flight deck, probably around the Aster VLS and the lifts to the hangar.
The ship will sail as of end September for sea trials. These will last one year approx, with delivery Sept 2007.
You will most likely have new pics in about a month, with the ship 100% completed :D

cheers

EMPAR installed, and RAN radar on the back mast as well. It is rotating already. There are still workers around just below the rotating air search radar.
By the way, berthed right next to Cavour was Andrea Doria, looking already 100% operational (in reality it has started sea trials, but from the outside it certainly looks finished).

Ciao e W la Marina e Fincantieri

The Duilio is being assembled in Riva Trigoso (Fincantieri/Genova). It should be sent to Muggiano around October this year for completion end 2007 and sea trials in 2008.

Cavour is such a good design it has been sold to India as well for its indigenous ADS carrier (an enlarged Cavour with similar engine system and combat system). The only thing one can regret is that Cavour isn't larger... ;) , especially the hangar, which can only contain 12 aircrafts (plus another 12 on the deck parking slots).

The same number of aircraft can officially be recovered in the smaller hangar of Garibaldi, i think that 12 aircraft for Cavour is relative at the previous “Project 163” multipurpose design with a docking well

Apparently not, there's space for 12 EH-101 or F35B. Potentially a bit more than 12 AV8B+, but that's it.
As on the De Gaulle and other carriers, 50% of the max load can be kept in the hangar, and 50% on deck.
The Garibaldi could contain 10 AV8B or 12 smaller Sea Kings.

No unfortunately I only saw the carrier from outside.
I'm waiting for the first pictures on the military magazines (rivista italiana difesa, panorma difesa, tecnologia&difesa, ...) probably on the October edition.
I visited the Garibaldi in '91 in Norfolk (it was taking on its first Harriers) and the CIC already looked huge to me : rows of computer screens for SAMs, SSMs, ASW, flight control operations, all the radars, satellite communications...)

cheers

Have you got some information also about the future Italian Navy LHD ? :p:
Nothing accurate unfortunately. Fincantieri has a 12,000 tonne 160-metre design that dates back to 2001, basically an enlarged San Giusto.
As time passes without funding, the Navy is considering a much larger LHD similar to the Spanish BPS design, with ski jump & all. Since the ship is now planned for delivery at approx 2012-2014... it is likely to replace Garibaldi.
Expect many more changes in the coming years !

ciao
