Russian Army Restructuring

The reason for the reforms is that the current Russian divisions are too large to be used as a whole in most situations. For example in the Ossetian war, none of the divisions were used as a whole. Instead elements from the 19th and 42nd MR, and 76th and 7th VDV, as well as independent rgts, brigades, and btlns were used. Generally they were grouped into 5 units, each with a rgt at it's core, and additional assets to support it. This will probably be similar to the makeup of the new Russian brigades, several MR btlns, 1-2 tank btlns, and support assets. In effect this is what the units that actually end up used look like, so organizing along those lines in the first place makes it much more efficient.
Feanor - wht is the typical size of a division and that of the newly formed/forming brigades in RuA

We don't know the new brigade structure. However the current divisional structure is 3 MR rgts, 1 tank rgt, 1 self-prop arty, and 1 SAM rgt in an MR division. In a tank division it's 3 tank rgts and 1 MR rgt, with SAMs and SP arty.

EDIT: I believe the 33rd and 34th recently formed mountain brigades are good examples of the new brigade structure. If you can dig up what they consist of, it might be an indicator of sorts.

I have no doubt that Brigades are better in Mountains or other places, that is what they are for!
I also have no doubt that 5 divisions were combed for the Ossetian operation. I would not trust more than 2 or 3 battalions in any Russian Division to be able to chew gum and walk a straight line at the same time.

However, I dont think that the whole Russian Army is going over to that system yet. Not based in what happened last summer. These guys have always had fun playing games with western analysts, I suspect that our old enemies are at it again.
