Great news assuming 16 are actually acquired. Time will tell. Government procrastination has resulted in a huge package of defence renewal occurring at the same time, 88 F-18s, 15 CSCs, and now 16 P-8s. Then there is the investment in new radars for NORAD not to mention significant capital equipment required for the army. A looming recession could see pollies trimming some of this.
A 16ac order from Canada will also keep the line open for a few more years, still some potential for further orders from other nations as well as current users.

Unfortunately, sometimes re-inventing the wheel becomes a C-F instead costing more money. The CH-148 is an example.
Although governments of all stripes screw with DND, it is the apathetic Canadian electorate which makes this possible. As I have referenced a number of times, PM Mulroney summed this up best, Canadians are a bunch of whiners. WRT submarines, I no longer care, SSNs are the only realistic choice and acquisition of SSNs will never happen. Might as well buy more P-8s and F-35s instead of limited capability SSKs.
I have been doing some research on prospective replacements for Canada's submarines. I'm having trouble keeping a straight face and typing Canada and SSN in the same sentence. Hey "Zellers" is back from the dead, so who knows whats possible!? Maybe we should start a thread for prospective submarine replacements? Would you like to or should I?

I do not know, the RCN might be able to make an offer on some 2nd hand Collins-class SSG's in about a decade.

Even a Canada SSK thread would be a waste of space at that the moment. We would not even have the Victoria class had it not been for the Upholder deal which as it turned was no deal at but at least kept the RCN in the sub business. The best part was the stain it left on Chrétien, almost as big as the EH101 debacle. As for SSNs, neither the USN, Canadian pollies or the electorate would support them for the RCN.
I think the embarrassment caused by the used sub and Hornet purchases make the probability of future used kit as unlikely IMO. The path of least resistance is no future subs for this government and I doubt Conservatives, if they win office, would want to commit any more money to defence short of war breaking out.
