I don't think the design would need any major changes, just the usual requirements for RAN service.

The Cantabria was actually ordered after the JC1, so it is pretty much designed to look after JC1/Canberra class, along with Hobart Class etc, so capability/capacity wise it would fit the bill, we just need more than Spain.

I am still a firm believer that we need 3 for the fleet to maintain coverage East/West with one in maint/re-fit

Cheers
Marine Traffic shows HMAS Choules heading towards Jervis Bay, she has been loitering around the south coast of NSW during the day but I have noticed NS Canberra still manoeuvring inside Jervis Bay.
I hope this is rendezvous and rehearsal for a Grand entry into Sydney for NS Canberra.
Although I am excited I am also worried that something may be going wrong?
Do any of our experts have any updates?

Cheers Chris

No don't think anything is wrong, the thing is with a ship the size of Canberra and with its capabilities for every possible thing you can use or do with the ship there will be multiple tests to run, literally thousands and thousands of tests and not all of them are as much fun as full power trials, high speed turns etc.

majority are rather mundane to not only check systems but also to establish baselines as well, and that is just the manufacturer trials prior to handover, wait till Navy get hold of it :)

I may be drifting off into fantasyland, but I found myself wondering if an aircraft like the Nomad could operate as a COD from the LHD's. Providing priority transport beyond the range of the Helos.
It can easily operate from a normal landing field the size of the flight deck. But then we come to my big question mark, the ski jump.
The small extra capability it would provide would likely not be worth the expense, but I wonder could it be done.
If the RAN really needed long range COD V22 would be the way to go. Can't see the goverment forking out those sort of dollars when our Chinook fleet is so small.

I know in the past depending on what the item was they have airdropped via Hercules aircraft when out of helicopter range.

Navy magazine some time ago suggested the OV-10Bronco in the CAS role which could also double as a COD but that idea was dismissed by more knowledgeable people here than me.

When they do the speed trials aspect would they turn off the tracking so foreign governments cannot see how fast she goes, that would still have to come under opsec?

My gues is that full power trial will happen on the way back to Williamstown after the ship has had its docking and hull clean, pointless before that.

Thanks Aussienscale, I suppose even the dunny's and sewage systems need a workout and as a technician myself (building service stations with thousands of litres of petroleum), when you turn the switch on for the first time you have fingers crossed, let alone something the size and complexity of Canberra.
I rarely post as I am NO expert but have really appreciated everyone's input over the years, good or bad.
Bet a lot of us will be buying a pie at Harrys on Cowper Wharf road when the big girl arrives.

Cheers Chris

Jeez can't remember the last time I had a tiger at Harry's, reckon I'll just have to reacquaint myself when the big girls arrives and have a sticky beak.

According to marine traffic the pilot is heading toward Canberra off the heads. I hope there is going to be some nice shots of her coming through the heads on the news tonight, a nice patriotic story about our wonderful navy.

Some us who worked on her would rather have some good shots of her going out Port Phillip heads for the first time :) ie ocean bound for thr first time under her own steam.

I know Canberra can load-unload whilst along side, but can she make use of her stern ramp like HMAS Tobruk did with her bow ramp at FBE?
