So it is no longer a MAD MAD MAD world for them RAAFie Chappies.
No MAD boom. RAAF birds will be stock standard the same as USN birds. India has MAD booms on their P-8I designated aircraft. These are not as sophisticated as the US and Au aircraft.

Long time observer but this piece forced my hand to join the forum.
An opinion piece appeared in the Business Spectator here a couple of days ago recommending that Oz dump the JSF. Apart from giving Trudeau more credit for his research into his decision on the F-35 than his own countrymen, the author references a couple of recent submissions to the Australian Senate Defence Committee.

The main submission relies on Mike Hostage's comment about the F-35 needing F-22 to be effective but the final recommendation seems like they are drinking from Karlo's Krazy Koolaid. Spotted this on another forum and it was suggested this was a straight VIP purchase for Aus Gov work, with the price linked to the required comm suite.
I thought it was possibly another alternative and then spotted this - Special missions Gulfstream 550s for the RAAF?
If this is for a single G550 plus VIP comms and support, is not $93.5m USD - on the high side? Possibly a replacement for the RAAF's 'unconfirmed' EP-3C..
The FMS case is vague, but has been listed to the Aust Gov - L-3 / Australia Government G550 aircraft procurement.
Maybe Occam's razor or another white paper answer-in-waiting..

Mills and Price's submissions are a bedtime story for goon and kopp, There wasn't one thing that I didn't think was misrepresented. RAND had nothing to do with stillion and apa/repsim nonsense and it was something stillion, did off his own back and was independent from and unrelated to the RAND pacific vision exercise. he realised what the con was.
he told repsim aka mills and price to never contact him again. as per their testimony/submission previously given in 2012

I guess the major sticking point is even if the US starts up the F22 production, it still cannot be exported and from memory has to be passed by congress. they tried that back in 09 when Japan was chomping at the bit to get them.
The other thing I would like to point out RAAF has not had air superiority/interceptor aircraft since the Mirage IIIO(F) interceptors in 1965 and that ended in 1969(from memory) when (F) was converted to IIIO(A) standard to meet the ground attack role and then the disbandment of 76 Squadron(73).
If RAAF’s air superiority was deemed a necessity we would have had a mixed fleet back when the legacy hornets were on order as the F15 was deemed to be too much aircraft or exceeded our requirements.
I recall that the f-15 didn't have the strike capability at that time and was the reason it was excluded. although I agree that the early A2A f-15 was too much A2A for our needs, the same went for the f-22.
Some would argue that although the Shornet is a strike/fighter aircraft, it would hold air superiority in our region. also anywhere we went would be part of a coalition.
The article is behind a paywall but I can easily imagine the usual rehash of material it might contain.
At this stage, with development and testing proceeding nicely, full rate production around the corner and unit costs falling as predicted, I can't see any good coming of swapping platforms - particularly not when Australia has a healthy workshare of the program and has already sunk money into a lot of the infrastructure required to stand up a capability with the F35A.

For those interested. Looks like this contract is to modify two G550's.
Suspicions suggest these will be ELINT mission types to replace the RAAF EP-3 platforms. (Credit to buglerbilly).
Ain't going to matter. Both sides of politics are sold on the JSF, the RAAF is sold on the JSF and a lot of the money has been spent. The only real option they offer up is the ridiculous idea that we should try again to introduce an aircraft that was never available to us anyway and is now more than half a decade out of production...
Even Goon has realised he lost the fight before it started. He does little more than make snide remarks on his twitter feed...

Confirmation about the purchase of the G550s.

I would not think there was a requirment to brief opposition members unless they are part Senate commitee on defence which would meet behind closed doors, would not think the opposition leader can sit on it if she was not part of the commitee,

I'm an interested observer. It's been in the back of my mind for some time that a replacement would be needed for the existing capability.
One would have thought if someone on the Opposition side was across their brief, this would not have come as a surprise and the Acting Opposition Leader would have been briefed.
I trust they have access to better information than I do.

Goverment incumbent goverment is under no obligation to inform the opposition on matter of national security which these would come under, they only do so out of courtesy.
