Correct me if i am wrong

Hi fellows, new to this conversation so please do forgive me if i am a little back logged.

In reference to this discussion of Hornets, if I'm not mistaken, there was a big mess some time ago with the source codes for the F-18s right? F-18s were sold but the Americans withheld the source codes for the planes. Big chuck of machine with no autonomy in using it.

Was it an issolated case? or just a norm practice by America?:confused:

Putting everything into context, price, tech trasfers, autonomy etc. is MAF going to continue down this track for Hornets?

Could someone give me some good pointers into this? Thaks

A recording of Mahathir's speech -- titled ‘Current Issues in Malaysian Politics’

"But this great aircraft called F-18 which we bought from America........because the Americans sold the aircraft, but the source code is kept by them. So you cannot plan anything, you cannot fly them to carry out any bombing attacks against anybody but you have this wonderful aircraft..."

I know is harsh to bring in politic issue into military forum, but in this case, i have to speak a common doubt: things was happened in his term, and now, everything became his "i did not agreed with it in the beginning".

If the troop transport role goes to the PUTD then it would make sense to let the army decide on the replacement type. The air force can then piggyback on this type with a smaller order of specialized CSAR versions for commonality reasons. I don't see the army being ready to make that decision just yet. The Nuri will probably soldier on until then.

AF wants SAR/CSAR, PUTD wants utility
purchasing Mi-17 for AF is not going to happen IMO, although it could happen for the PUTD (remote possibility, after what happen to the previous order)
each have their own min spec (CSAR spec and utility spec), so although a same model could be purchased by both AF and PUTD for commonality reason, it could very well be 2 different model (or PUTD could go for attack helo first, hehe)
that said, AF have experiences with Mi-17, since its their pilot who are flying the Firefighter Dept's Mi-17 (also involved in SAR)

Yes, i agreed that Mi-171 is not the guy but you made a small mistake here. Malaysia's firefighting Mi-171 was from Ulan Ude, not kazan.

I thought two are from Kazan and two more (which was rejected by both the AF and the Police) are from Ulan Ude?
the Ulan Ude ones are the ones with dolphin noses

hrm... actually i m not aware of the Kazan batch which operates since 99. Ok, you are correct. So Bomba operates 4 of them totally? Anymore Mi-17 series operates in Malaysia?

Malaysia plans software upgrade for its F/A-18s

Malaysia plans software upgrade for its F/A-18s
Dzirhan Mahadzir JDW Correspondent
Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia is upgrade the software systems on its six F/A-18C and two F/A-18D Hornets to allow them to fully utilise the latest weapon systems for the aircraft.

The upgrade is expected to cost up to USD17 million and is to be completed by 2011. Work will be carried out by a US Navy-appointed contractor as the upgrade programme will be handled by the US Department of Defense under the Foreign Military Sales programme.

The upgrades are necessary since Malaysia's F/A-18s have not undergone any software upgrade since their delivery in 1997 and thus are not fully able to utilise weapon systems introduced for the Hornets since then, such as the Advanced Medium Range Air to Air Missile (AMRAAM) and the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM).

Malaysia currently has less than two dozen AMRAAMs in storage on US territory; it will bring them into the country this year. Malaysia has also sent a request for an undisclosed number of JDAMs that is currently pending with the US.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BTW, 20 AMRAAMs were ordered in 2005.
